1997 gran prix se fuel pump will not work.

The fuel pump has been replaced along with the fuel pump relay. This is the third time the car wouldent start due to the fuel pump not kicking on before starting the car. The gauge cluster also goes wacky. All the gauges peg out and a clicking noise comes from behind the dash and all the dummy lights stay on even after the key is removed. Sometimes the car starts fine for a couple of weeks the it happens again. I'm stumped...

Do I have to remove the gas tank to inspect/change the fuel pump on a 1991 pontiac grand prix?

Unfortunately, yes. It's a pain. I own a 1991 Pontiac grand prix SE 3.1L.

My fuel pump problem started when I ran out of gas (gas gauge was offset) Of course it shuts off w/o gas but it will more likely kill your fuel pump and clog the $#!t out of your filter.

If it makes a buzzing sound under the vehicle w/o the engine running, near the trunk area, replace it along with the filter.

Engine starts then fuel pressure drops, engine dies, then fuel pressure returns engine will start, fuel pressure drops, engine dies

First replace the fuel filter if you haven't done so. Then then you can try replacing the pump relay [ some times there's the same relay in the box you can try, just make sure the part number is the same ]. If niether cures the problem, you will have to replace the fuel pump in the tank.

Where is the fuel pump cut off switch located on a pontiac grand prix se 1997?

There is no fuel pump cut off switch in General Motors vehicles. If you don`t have fuel pressure or the pump is not running you have to check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. You can check the fuel pump fuse and make sure it is good.Hope this helps.Good luck.

My car starts but after a while dies waht can be

Hello! You're symptoms sound very much like a common problem associated with the fuel pump resistor. The GTP engine has a two speed fuel pump. There are two relays that control the fuel pump via the PCM module. The fuel pump relay and fuel pump hi-speed relay. Tied into the hi-speed relay is a fuel pump resistor that may go bad.

Symptoms vary but primarily the engine will start but die in a matter of seconds due to insufficient fuel pressure.

Here is a picture of the relay - which is located in the fuse box in the engine compartment:

What you can do to both diagnose this and either narrow it down to this or disqualify it as the culprit is remove relay #15, and bend out the tab labeled "85", and then reinstall the relay. If this does solve your problem, then you need to replace the Fuel Pump Resistor. Doing this will bypass the resistor, and place the fuel pump in "high" speed mode at all times. Once you have replaced the resistor, you need to bend the tab back to its normal position and replace the relay.
NOTE: while this may be a helpful diagnosis tool, and provide a temporary fix - doing this procedure for a prolonged period of time can lead to fuel pump failure. Use this at your own risk.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Recently put new fuel pump not even 3 months ago. New fuel filter as well same time. 2 weeks ago from today was going about 55 to 65 mph oil light comes on and car...

If you replaced the fuel pump then there is a possibility that during the job then some debris from the tank and/or filter got loose somewhere into the fuel system and is in your lines. It could even be a very tiny speck of gasket material, old or new.
