Many use a mini generator. Disconnect the wiritng from the tach place a voltmeter on it while engine is running. If voltage varies as rpm goes up then the tach iself is bad. If no signal either th emini generator is defective or the wiring bad.

The tachometer gets it's signal from the ignition coil, you could have a poor connection there or it could be that the gauge itself has failed. It's probably not just a fuse since there is usually one fuse for the entire instrument panel

A dealer or repair shop will have to check for bulletins,
in there data base,on the issue & then if the vehicle system
data is there, check with a scan tool

After that you have to follow trouble charts

People that have resolvde that issue before, may be
able to jump a head somewhat in the test process

Never take advice-- even here-- on a guess

Many vehicles can have the same symptom, but
NOT the same fix

Doesn't matter what someone else did to solve the problem,
yours may be another fix

Most likely the plug that goes into the cluster. Remove it and just plug it back in. I've done too many to count that would fix this problem. If all the gauges dieid.

No gas, no spark, 1991 chevy cavalier 2.2l 4cyl

This is an all too common problem with the Cavalier and other GM J-body cars. Usually it is because of the crankshaft position sensor or the harness going between it and the DIS (aka ignition module). Without the DIS seeing a signal from the crank sensor, it doesn't know when to trigger fuel and spark.

Sometimes this can also be caused by a faulty ignition switch. The switch will allow you to "crank" the car, but it doesn't make the proper connections for the ignition system, so the car never actually runs.

The previously indicated oil pressure switch could also be causing the problem, but if you hear your fuel pump run then it's OK.

Hopefully this helps. If not, your Cavalier is as messed up as mine and probably not worth fixing.

2002 chevy cavalier gauges not working - battery was jumped after leaving lights on- gauges quit working after

Start the car. remove the cluster fuse from the fuse panel to the left of the dash. Wait 5 seconds and reinsert the fuse. It should be fine until you replace the battery again.
