I would like to say the transmission has failed internally

But I can not prove that, base just on my experience,
even as a former trans shop owner

Doesn't sound too good though

Most people never change the fluid every 2 to 3 years
& by the time the trans is 10 years old & not many make
that ,they are ruined

If it is a standard you need to tell us

No more to add -I think it's done & that is why it was sold

You can try a trans shop, but I know they will pitch a rebuild,
even if not necessary, just to stay in business

The other thought would be to remove the valve body &
clean it (there should be video on that) I wouldn't let anyone
do it or pay for that

That issue can happen in cold weather when the aluminum
gets smaller until warm

I would check for codes-need professional tools for that
Clean the valve body
New fluid-the correct fluid-no way to know it it ever had the proper
fluid in it
Add one bottle of red lubgard ,no other product

Usually burnt and discolored ATF mean pump or torque converter not doing there job or bands and clutches are worn. Shift solinoid or a pressure problem is the problem with 2nd and 3rd gear, Take it to a transmission shop and have them look it over but like I said earlierdiscolored ATF could mean a rebuild.

My 92 Lexus LS400 recently lost all forward gears but reverse works just fine.

You can only perform certain tasks yourself on a transmission. In this case it sounds like you need to visit a transmission shop. On occasion cleaning the oil and filter, making sure the trans is upto the correct level on fluid, may resolve an issue. If it does not then you probably need professional assistance.

You shoould visit a good independent rather than a lexus specialist as they will almost certainly charge an arm and leg for labor

GOOD LUCK

It's a bad solenoid. Reverse and low gears work off the same set of clutches. If you have first gears , then its a solenoid problem. I would first start by pulling plugs, transmission, TCM and everything in between. Check for corrosion, Use an ohm meter and check the wires for continuity. On some models the safety neutral switch/ range selector switch has a lot to do with how the transmission shifts. If the tcm can't read the switch it wont send power to the solenoid. so far I haven't found a place that will sell just solenoids. You have to buy the whole package. These start at about $200.00

What your doing is called abuse.
I realize your just diagnosing things

Having owned a trans shop, and without knowing the mileage on your trans,it sounds as though a rebuild is in your future.

No external fix, when they don't engage

If your mechanically inclined, you could pull the valve body and clean.
If the fluid is anything other than pink and smelling like new, your done.

The shift linkage could be wearing out inside the transmission.

1st thing to do is test the system for codes, the problem is most likely a failed or stuck shift solenoid indside the trans, have you ever serviced the trans, sometimes a fluid and filter cahnge will cure these kinds of issues.

Engine Rev Trans does not grab going Forward

We had the very same problem and I found this post somewhere on the net and it worked! After ours stopped going forward, it went in reverse fine too then it stopped moving completely. We just pulled the sensor off today and are looking for a new one but at least the car goes great now. 15th Jul 2007, 21:04 Bought my wife a 99 Ford Taurus at auction. Like others the Transmission sensor gave out. A temporary quick fix is to open the hood, and simply pull off the sensor connector plug on top of the transmission. The transmission will now operate properly in both OD and drive. You will notice your rpm's are steady as your speed goes up - loss of fuel economy due to the failed sensor ( to technical to explain here...). Two things to do: Change out the old transmission fluid immediately - its gonna require synthetic fluid at a higher price, but is worth it as it shifts far better now. And change out the coolant. In fact, I suggest changing out ALL of the fluids and start clean. Until you get the sensor replaced your fuel economy will **** for a while, but its better than not having wheels at all and it IS safe to drive.

Reverse engages HARD!!!

Check for trans codes then I would suggest a fluid change if there are no trouble codes, many times these kinds of problems are caused by a little piece of dirt causing a shift solenoid to stick.
