I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima. A few months ago it started to shake while driving and the service engine light comes on and flashes. The car will stop shaking but the engine light remains on. I was getting a cylinder misfire and did change all spark plugs. I have been asking around, could it be the "crank shaft"?

Stop by one of the auto parts stores in your area. Most will offer to read your code. Understand that this will be in regard to the engine control, sensors, and related feedback.

Does the shake start when you first start the engine but then ceases to shake afterward? Does the shaking occur with engine acceleration? This would indicate a motor mount issue which would not show up in the above OBDII code. Motor mounts do not need to fail completely for such a problem to exist. Leaking oil can soften the rubber in the mount and allow for sensible vibration.

Sometimes it starts when the car is turned on, sometimes it is when I brake. It varies when and how long the shake continues. We have actually just discovered that there is a small oil leak going on as well. Could this oil leak be the cause?

Asking around for what ?

You need to stop using any vehicle, as soon
as the check light comes on your dash

Take it to a shop

They will check for fault codes, diagnose them,
component test to find a problem

Continuing to drive it with cylinder misfires,
is a good way to ruin the exhaust converter
& other items

If interested --I suggest you google OBD 2 Vehicle Systems
& study about today's vehicles. This technology has been
here for 35 years

Spark Plugs get changed every 3 years

Seldom even need to worry about spark plugs, when you
have a problem, as your testing will lead you to them if
necessary

The only way to approach any vehicle problem, is to
test it, to find a problem

No problem found--no need for parts

It's unikely to be the cranshaft, as that problem would not go away. It could be your ignition wires -- replacing those is not that expensive, and may cure the misfire problem. My Buick had this problem and replaicng the plugs and ignition wires frixed it. But have you had a service place read the error messages and diagnose it?

I would start with checking the computer for trouble codes.
Sounds like a bad connection in the dash wiring or key switch, but the trouble code might steer you in the right direction.

As for trouble codes, and the dealers recommendation. They are true and accurate, although I would get a second opinion from another auto shop other than the dealer. Do not disclose what you already know other than the problems you are expriencing.
