They last along time. Gasoline Cools the pump. So allowing your car to run low or out of gas, unnecessarily heats up the pump. Then again Eventually the pump just wears out.

Just replaced 2 fuel pumps but the gas tank will not fill when pumping gas - the pump cut off

When you're getting gas at the gas pump if it is shutting off due to back pressure it has nothing to do with your fuel pump. There is a small breather tube that runs from your tank to the filler neck this can sometimes clogged up or fail when this happens if the house collapses the air can not circulate back through the tank and causes this problem

Vehicle wont start after filling with gas

Fuel pumps are common to fail when filled with gas. Most of the time when fuel tank is low and very hot. The hot pump is shocked by the cold fuel and causes the vains in the fuel pump to fail and sieze to the inner pump workings. Using a rubber hammer hit the center of the fuel tank a few times while someone turns the key. Most of the time it works. Replacement of the pump will probally be needed.

What happens when a fuel pump starts to go out?

You shouldn't have to pump the gas for a fuel injected vehicle to start. Where is the very loud noise coming from? If it's from the gas tank, then it very well could be the fuel pump beginning to fail. Sometimes you get no warning. You just get stranded. A mechanic would likely check your fuel pressure with a gauge.

200e chevy tahoe sputtered shut down while driven on turnpike after getn gas started back up few minutes later thot it was bad gas what else could be problem

It could be the fuel pump. The pump is in the gas tank. The pump is actually cooled by the fuel. Occasionally, in hot weather, when the pump starts to get old, if you run the fuel tank very low, the pump will heat up. Then, when refueling, you are putting fuel in the vehicle that comes from underground at about 50 degrees F. This can cause the pump to fail.

Check for faulty fuel pump in a 98 expedition

A faulty fuel pump will do one of three things:
  1. Fail to run whatsoever, you will have 0 fuel pressure
  2. Run, but is worn to the point it won't hold pressure, your car will read low fuel pressure, it will spit sputter, seem to idle, but fails to run engine at speed.
  3. Develope an internal electrical short which will allow the pump to run as long as the tank is full with cool gas to keep the pump cool, but will fail to run properly when the tank is 1/2 full, 1/4 full etc.. usually starts to fail when gas gauge reaches a certain lvl.

Why won't my 2001 1500 dodge ram start after running out of gas? (i've put gas in it)

You should measure the fuel pressure. When you run out of gas the fuel pump is not cooled by fuel. This can cause a pump that is ready to quit to fail. There could be other causes but I think the fuel pump is the most likely cause.

I hope this helps.
