Loss of mpg on 2006 legacy Subaru

A dirty air filter will prevent adequate air from entering the engine thus reducing gas mileage. Worn spark plugs or a weak spark (defective spark coils) can do the same. A defective "upstream" oxygen sensor (in the exhasut system) can lower fuel mileage. It forces the engine computer to guess at combustion efficiency without feedback from the sensor. It will err on the "rich" side to save the engine, which means it wastes gas. A "check engine" light will be "on" if that is the problem.

In winter, more alcohol is added to gasoline in cold climates to due to the lack of photosynthesis in the region (to make oxygen for us to breath.) Reduced fuel mileage results. Alcohol burns cleaner (and cooler) but it contains less energy (BTU) per gallon than "straight" gasoline. For example, E85 won't take you as far as a tank of regular gasoline.

If your car is designed to use 87 octane fuel, there is no need to use higher octane fuel. Higher octane fuels are for "high performance" engines with increased compression ratios. High octane fuel burns "slower" in the cylinder (to help avoid "detonation") so that the engine can take advantage is its greater compression ratio and advanced igntion timing to make more power. If your Legacy has a turbo, it will likely require the use of premium gasoline to avoid "detonation" under boost. Otherwise, "cheap", 87 octane gas is fine.

Mercedes c180 kompressor, 2003 model, 271 engen. I was when it flashed a red light on the dashboard saying oil level too high reduce. Then suddenly the engen stopped. I tried to crank it again and it...

Have you checked your oil level? Is it over full on the dipstick? What does the oil look like - clear or milky? If milky, you may have had a head gasket failure or crack in the block/head that allowed coolant into the crankcase. If you kept running the engine after this, it may very well have seized. The timing chain can't get 'too tight', so that is not your problem.
Use a breaker bar with the appropriate sized socket and see if you can manually rotate the crankshaft pulley. If not, your engine is going to need some serious work (or replacement).

Reduced engine power

Several checks for this...free check at good exhaust/mech shops on clogged catalytic converter...dirty air filter...clean Mass Air Flow Sensor (near air filter, use only MAF sensor spray) Spray and wipe out throttle body with spray cleaner...dirty gas use fuel additive "Heet" removes water, and use gas addidtive fuel injector cleaner...I like the STP super concerntrated...Most of these are low cost checks. Hope this helps.

What causes reduce engine power light comes on?

A lot of times it's just a dirty throttle body, which will cause the reduced engine power or safe mode. Clean it with throttle body cleaner with the battery unhooked. When finished, drive around for 20 minutes or so, so the computer can relearn a properly functioning throttle body.

The reduced engine power light comes on at 50 mph what can the problem be?

A lot of times this is a dirty throttle body, possibly sticking at this mph. Clean with battery disconnected with throttle body cleaner. Must be nice and shiny. If the throttle body isn't functioning correctly or it's filthy, reduced engine power light will go on to act as a safe mode.

My 2006 jetta is getting horrible gas mileage for the past two months. What could be causing this?

Several things can contribute - dirty air filter, cheap gasoline (summer gasolines are manufactured with an ethanol component that typically reduces mileage as much as 15 %), dirty fuel injectors, etc. Not like bad plugs unless you have unusually high mileage on your vehicle.

First - check the air filter, then add some Gumout Fuel Injector Cleaner, and then switch to Shell or Marathon gasoline. No real good way to get around the ethanol issue.

Idle goes up and down

The check engen light should be on if it's a fuel prob. or other senser such as an idle air controll valve. If no light is on, clean the throttle body and add fuel system cleaner.
