Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Getting spark to the coil every now and then and the auto shut down relay shuts everything down. Will not turn over.

Changed Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, main ignition coil, cps,idle air flow regulator and the brain ECM-PCM. Charging system is fine also getting fuel. Help

Usually with 96 and newer vehicles, a new pcm has to be programmed to work. Did you check applicable trouble codes before you replaced, anything? you may be able to get some mil codes by cycling the key. Turn the key just till the dash lites come on, no further, cycle the key on--off, on--off, on. Then the mil on the dash starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. Your looking for two digit codes.
Some makes and models, the computer has to see both the cam and crank sensor signals or it won't ground the asd relay, other than the initial prime. I'm not saying replace anything, you've replaced so much, I can't tell what's going on?

    but the key trick clears spark codes (devil in the details) use a real scan, tool , dont let 9 bucks keep you blind this car is OBD2 compliant. crank it , the when the ASD drops, see why on the scan tool. the above link posted,shows the key trick and all codes that drop ASD, what more could you want, that is correct some ECU need both cmp and CKP sensors to make spark but again the scan tool shows all 1 in 10 or more , sensor drop outs,, all it takes is a simple scan tool. the 1996 has USA EPA compliant P0xxx codes. replace nothing, us the tool , working EFI blinded, is totally crazy idea and 100x worse on newer cars. do you need a link to a tool? can send 100s. all dirt chip. or rent one. (ask friends to barrow one) All car guys have one. ask.

    yes , ornament, and towing is expensive, a scan tool works. for fraction of that. there are 2 kinds, laptop or hand held. here are some links, one great deal first. by usa company

    even a dirt cheap code reader can get you by. above are full featured scan tools not just simple reader. let me give one example , you scan and see TPS is stuck at WOT (broken ground wire to it) the ECU thinks you are attempting, unflood mode, and cuts all fuel. so a full scan tool wins here. but you only need to see the DTC errors, cranking, that will nail it for you. try it. buy a reader, is less than floor mats.

Great another ASD drop.
you meant it turns over great(but does not start)
all starters crank and turn over the engine. starting is another matter.
why you can not find this is for 2 reasons, no scan tool tops list
and ASD ops.
the scan tool (even a 9 buck one) works in USA cars 96, (all)
click ASD here. on this page.
it tells you all 8 ways for ASD to drop
and guess what, all ASD drops are reported by those 9 buck tools.

Have 99 suburban 5.7. Just had fuel pump,filter,distributor,cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, control module and coil replaced a little over a year ago. Drove great until it just shut off recently...


You might check for a fuel shut off valve. Some vehicles have them in case of an accident, it turns off the fuel pump. Some are just a relay that can be reset.

Are you loosing spark or fuel pressure when the engine stops ?
Some models are known for a problem with the fuel pump relay under the dash.

2000 dodge ram 1500 4x4 wont start. it will turn over but will not crank. we have replaced the coil and the crank sensor and it will still not work. Is also not the timing belt or the fuel pump. any ideas...


are you getting any spark from the coil and not to the plugs? if so replace the rotor button in the distributor cap, possibly has a hole burned in it. if no fire from the coil check to see if the coil is being triggered on the ground side and power to the coil on the positive. if no power check the ASD relay if no ground pulse then check the circuit from the computer. also may want to check the camshaft sensor in the distibutor.

Runs for 20 minutes, gets hot and shuts down. Still has spark


I had the same problem, took to a benz dealer, it was the fuel pump relay, cost for repair $200.

Im not getting spark to my spark plugs


Remove the distributor cap, so that the rotor is visible. Have an assistant turn the ignition to crank the engine over. If the rotor does not turn when the engine is cranking, then you need a timing belt or chain.

If the rotor does turn, then replace the coil.

it might be the coil.the coil is what sends the spark.it plugs in to the center of distriutor cap.

Intermitent starting


sometimes the ais(automatic idle speed) valve gets loaded with
carbon. its an easy fix. you have to remove the throttle body
invert it and you will see the ais chamber and look in and see if it is
built up with soot. carb cleaner should work.if you can remove
the valve for better cleaning. peterjai
