Question about 2006 Ford Fusion
This is the 2nd time I have been stuck and unable to shift out of park, the first time I was towed to the garage, this time the tow truck driver advised me that when the brake lights don't work the shifter is on the same circuit and wont work, there is a release beside the shifter, how does it work....
I believe if you pop off the cap you just push down on it with another key or small screw driver you could be having issues with the brake light switch or the shifter assembly.

Testimonial: "thank you, that's exactly what the tow truck driver did, I stayed in neutral or drive till I arrived at the repair shop, it was the brake light switch, again...."
I would advise checking the brake light switch , this is located at the top of the brake pedal, disconnect the wire and turn the switchclockwise one full turn , reconnect the wire and check the lights , you may have to repeat this a few times until the adjustment is just right , very uncommon for both brake lights to go at same time , hope this helps you

Does the trans fluid have a burnt smell and is it brown or dark brown as opposed to a red wine color? If this is the case then you may have a service issue caused by a clogged trans filter which is what this sounds a great deal like and the sooner you get the truck to the dealer or your mechanic the better as the trans in these are not cheap to rebuild or replace.

u will need to fix the brake lights, it is most likely a defective brake light switch, this switch is located at the top of the arm the brake pedal is attached to, it is easy to replace, no special tools needed
