I've replace the radiator cap and tried running the motor to get the air pockets out.

Double check that your rad cooling fan is operating as it should, but after that, I'd be looking at a good rad flush, or rad replace. Believe it or not, your heater core is like a small rad, and when you turn the heater on, it actually cools the circulating coolant, slighly, and therefore shows a difference on your gauge. Like I said, make sure the rad fan is coming on when engine temperature is at normal or slightly higher, and if it is, then I'd be taking a close look at my radiator, especially if it wasn't replaced when headgasket was done.

You may need to ask AAA to put a radiator pressure tester on the resevoir bottle and pump it up to operating pressure(Pressure cap rating) and see if it over pressurises while it is running at operating temp, rev engine up and down and watch what the testers pressure readings do,it should move up and down in sync with the water pump.If the pressure keeps building i would have to believe that combustion chamber gases are over pressurising your cooling system. Also test the pressure cap is functioning within factory specs.

SOURCE: car runs hot
CHECK YOUR RELAY IN YOUR FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE INNER FENDER. THE A/C AND THE HEATER RELAY ARE SAME. CHECK AND SEE IF THE A/C REALY WORKS BY TURNING ON YOUR A/C SWITCH. THE ELECTRIC FAN SHOULD START RIGHT AWAY. OTHERWISE YOU HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE ENGINE ACHEIVES OPERATING TEMP TO KICK THE FAN ON. IF ONE DON'T WORK AND OTHER OTHER DOES... SWITCH THE RELAY AND SEE IF IT WORKS. BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. $9.00 FOR A NEW RELAY AT CHECKER AUTO PARTS.
