Normally you should not be able to start the car without it being in 'Neutral' or 'Park'. First try changing the starter inhibitor switch on the transmission. Next check out the selector rod for the gear position, this connects between the bottom of gear selector and the input selector shaft on the transmission. Next check out you fluid level in the auto-box on the autobox fluid dipstick. If low you can add extra fluid by the dipstick tube. Ordinarily it is suggested that the fluid level is checked when the engine is running but in park.cannot start the car unless in gear I suggest you do not do this for safety reasons.
As you're sitting in the car, behind right side of dash above kick panel. Yes the speed sensor can cause erratic shifting, but first check the condition of your fluid and trans. filter.
This sounds like a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) not being read correctly by the computer, or the VSS is inaccurate, erratic, etc. The erratic speedo seems to verify my theory doesn't it???
the neutral safty switch tells the comp. what gear is in. when its not working the light wont move and the car will not go threw the gears prop. the switch is nown to go out. it is located on the tranny or down under the shifter
