there is a little mark on the crankshaft which you line up with the 'o' mark on the casing ..
remove the cam cover and look at the cam you should see a nob on the cam about 3 th lob and that should be facing just left of the engine ..
if you have a turbo there is two notchs on the injection pump pully ..if turbo there is a 't' mark on the rear of the cover the notch on the pully should mark up with the 't'..
the timing is set..

The timing marks are stamped into the steel pulley and flywheel and there should be a pointer attached to the engine. Degreasing the engine with GUNK and power washing it should uncover them.
I'm pretty sure it's crucial to have the engine timed to TDC as it relates to the end of compression/beginning of power stroke, and NOT the end of exhaust stroke.
With gas engines I do the following, to determine the TDC, by removing the #1 plug and insert a long straw, while turning the motor by hand watch for the maximum height of the straw, this will give you a TDC but knowing if its on the exhaust or compression stroke can only be determined if you were watching the closure of the intake valve indicating the begining of the next power stroke. Once you have this set look for the timing marks again. if you can't find them pick up a service manual at the library or autoparts store for photos and instructions.

1) timing belt - see the small dot on tooted crank (small) pulley and match this with a notch ^ on engine body. Align the 'F' on overhead camshaft front pulley with lower crank shaft (small pullet). You should also alight the top pulley with a ^ on right side of big pulley when facing engine from front
In case of diesel pump:
2) cam belt - alight the dot mark on small camshaft pulley with notch ^ on tappet cover. Move and hold pump pulley and alight it with dot on this pulley to dot mark on plate to which pump is bolted.
