Sounds like your not getting enough voltage to the shift solenoids. My alternator went out and when the battery voltage got really low the trans wouldn't shift. As soon as I put a new alternator on and charged the battery the trans worked like it should. If your motor is turning over slowly try charging or replacing the battery and see if that helps.

96 chevy silverodo will not shift out of 1st until I let off the gas at high rpm then shifts to 3rd but that's it won't shift any higher

You probably need to service the tranny as in change filter and fluid and in addition to that there is a little round piece which is most likely plugged into the rear of the trans just above the pan with a vacuum line going to it, called a modulator valve which controls shifting, replace it also.

Goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown

It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell

96 taurus shifts out of 1st @3200 then gos to2nd only to gos back

Possible solution:

Too many drivers neglect to change trans fluid or filter until trans is trash.
You might try doing that. Remove the oil pan and install a new filter and clean out the pan gook.
It 's a 25% chance you can drive ok again.

'94 Astro - long ago I added Lucas trans additive, afterward van wouldn't shift up from 1st unless manually shifted from 1st to 2nd, then won't shift any higher. Was told by a reputable trans repairman to...

it does sound like a solenoid in the trans. the problem with addditive is that it has detergent in it and will loosen dirt and sediment that has collected in the trans mission this will the flow through the tran and clog parts like the shift solenoids. hope this helps some

1996 Dodge Ram Transmission shifting problem

I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows:
1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse.
2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket
3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz
4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions)
5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet
6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter
7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4
8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid

That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.

Anyhow good luck, let me know if it did the trick for you.
