How do I remove the oil pan on a 2006 Chevy Malibu LT 2.2L engine?

Did you remove the two reversed torx head screws on each side the bottom of the timing cover.

Testimonial: "No I did not remove those. I haven't clue where they are. Timing cover is located where please? What should these reversed torque screws look like? Last why would the timing cover be locked onto an oil pan?"

  • BJ Russell Nov 24, 2014

The timing cover is on the front of the engine. The capscrews are on the front bottom of the oil pan and I think they are at a slight angle, not straight down. The head looks like a TORX drive bit and can loosened with a small 12 point socket. And I remember when vehicles were fairly easy to work on, 50's to early 70's. As to why they would engineer it that way I don't know but I have some guesses!

Sir would you happen to have a chiltons manual with component parts locator for download and free? Or perhaps a picture of the spot you are referring to?

Not positive on that engine but there could be bolts going in from the sides into the main bearing caps.

Testimonial: "I've looked all around the oil pan and besides removing the one bolt from the lower air compressor nothing should stop me from removing the oil pan. I am concerned about breaking my pan by trying to remove it too forcefully."

If all the bolts are off, then the gasket is holding the oil pan in place and your going to have to tap it with a mallet, Not a hammer but a mallet so you don not damage the oil pan. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: timing chain tensioner worn; plastic parts are in eng oil pan

No, should have enough room to slide it out ,if not disconnect the engine mounts and jack up or lift up the engine just enough to slide the pan.

Lift your car and place on jack stands. Then drain engine oil from pan. If there is/are any other steering or suspension components under oil pan, remove these first. Then, begin removing all bolts that hold pan in place. There should be a few bolts that come from the rear of the transmission section that also hold engine oil pan. Remove these. Once all bolts are removed, use a rubber mallet to tap oil pan until is breaks loose. If hard to remove, use a pry bar or flat head screw driver to pry oil pan off. Install in reverse order.

Some have to be pried off. Sometimes you have to hammer a ***** driver between the pan and engine. The lip of the pan will bend, make sure you straighten it before going back together. Use plenty of silicone. I use a 1/4 inch bead around the pan and every hole.

You have to remove both engine mount bolts, then jack the engine up until it starts lifting the truck. The pan still will not come out until you pry it out. Be careful. You will also have to pry it back into place. If it is four wheel drive, remove the front differential first.

I hit a rock with my 07 HHR, it put a gash in the oil pan. I am trying to remove the oil pan but it won't budge. I have taken all of the bolts out and it still won't budge. How do I remove the oil pan?

Take a second look to make sure you have all bolts removed. Take a large rubber hammer and give it a few hits on all 4 corners. This should dislodge it. If not you will have to pry it loose going all around the outside edge. It is stuck due to the sealant they use at the factory.

How do you remove the oil pan on 2001 grand prix

Remove the motor mount bolts on both sides. Using a jack & wood block, jack the engine high enough to allow the pan clearance enough for removal. Use wood blocks(4 by 4) at motor mounts & lower engine mounts onto the blocks. Lower & remove jack & block at jack. Remove pan bolts & carefully using a large pry bar or common screwdriver pry the pan away from engine . Good luck!
