Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

The air compressor does not turn on right away.

In the past when I started the car and had the A/C on it would take a minute for the cold air to start. Now after about 5-8 min. I feel the surge when the compressor kicks in.

You need to charge your A/C compressor. You can buy a DIY kit at most any parts store or take it to a garage and have them do it for you. Obviously it will cost more if you take it to the garage. The DIY kits have instructions that are usually pretty easy to follow. Just be aware that sometimes you need to purchase a kit that has a longer hose if your valve is located further down in the engine compartment.

SOURCE: Air Conditioner works intermittently

It could be your low pressure cycle switch is going bad. Check the connection to the switch and it's is located on the A/C Accumulator. The other thing to check is the A/C relay and that is located in the glove box. There is a panel in the glove box that say's relay, there is three relays in there and one of the out side relay's out of the three is the A/C. can not remember which one it is. The middle relay is the fuel pump and the other one is the third break light. Switch the two out side relays and see if your A/C get's better. the other thing too is if the R134a is just a little low, and needs to be topped off. Good luck and hope this helps. if your going to try to recharge the A/C system your self, keep in mind not to over charge.

SOURCE: A/C compressor does not engage for 10-15 minutes after start

you have a clutch gap problem, the a/c clutch has worn and the electric magnet can not pull it together. take your car to a local repair shop and ask them to set your clutch gap to 0.014" inch. this repair is simple and should cost less than 100 dollars

Heater does not come on for a few minutes on purpose. The system waits until engine coolant is warm so fan not blowing cold air on you. The ticking can be the heater waiting to get turned on (air door closed) if sound seems to be coming from dash. System should work right away if you use A/C though.

Screaming noise from ac no cold air

It sounds to me that your belt or tensioner is worn, if the noise goes away when the ac is off then it is just the belt slipping, it takes a lot of power to run the compressor and if the belt is worn it most likely slipping on the pully when you engage the clutch.

2004 sebring air conditioner stops and starts

Low freon will cause the compressor to short cycle, when the compressor runs the pressure in the low line is pulled down and the low pressure switch turns it off. Not running the pressure builds up and turns it back on. In the old days there was no low pressure switch, with no freon to carry the oil the compressor was destroyed.

You would need to find out if the compressor continues to run when the cold air stops.

Just had this happen today to my 2007 silverado heat on the right side cold air on the left side. After engine was off 15 minutes and restarted heat was on both sides. I'm guessing a relay failed to open door to allow the heat to flow thus blowing cold air.will monitor diligently for a while.

Just change the compressor it is easier than changing the clutch if you do dont forget to change the reciever dryer and the orfice tube and have a evacuation done on it.

1998 Volvo V70 A/C Intermittent

I had exactly the same problem. When your engine is cold and off check the gap on your ac compressor with a feeler gauge, it should be between 0.3 and 0.5mm. If it is larger you need to re-shim which invloves undoing a nut on the end off the compressor and removing the clutch plate, then removing the appropriate shims (look like washers) then replace. The reason it blows warm after 10 minutes or so is because the ac compressor gets hot and the clutch gap gets too large for the electro-magnetic clutch to engage. Some people would say that you need a new compressor but all you need to do is a re-shim.

If I start my truck and turn the A/C on it works, but once I start driving it goes to hot air.

I see two possibilities to check first.

Check if your belt is loose. Usually there should be around 1/2 inch of give or play on the longest area of belt between two pulleys. If the belt is loose, then when you accelerate, the belt slips past the AC pulley, and can not turn the compressor.

Next, it is possible that the blend door, which allows heat from the heater core into the mix of cold/warm air is not working right. It could be stuck open so that you have warm air mixing in with the cold air. As the engine gets warm, that heat transfers in through the blend door.

If you start your vehicle, and let it sit for 15-20 mins, will the cold air go to hot air also? If so, then this could be the problem.

Let me know how you progress!
