I need to figure out what is draining my new battery during the night when everything is turned off.

The cables were replaced with the new battery 2 months ago. I have checked all fuses with a tester that lights up on all the ones I can test with it. The only thing I notice is an occasional short beep sound from the car when it is parked in the driveway. I have heard it 3 times now in the last 10 minutes from inside my house. I have to recharge the battery every day.

One way to do this is to wait till its dark and get to the fuse block and pull each fuse one at a time slowly , the one that is pulling a load will have a large arc or like a spark to it then its just a matter of tracing out the circuit !

Testimonial: "Hi Brendan. Thank you for your suggestion. The "large arc or spark" part scared me, but it got me thinking about checking certain circuits with an analog meter. (the radio doesn't work) I also am experimenting and have found that if I don't activate the anti theft alarm over night the battery stayed at 100%. However, when I drove it around doing errands all day, activating the anti theft alarm in between stops the battery was at 50% by the end of the day."

Check the cam sensor and crankshaft sensor. If either of these are defective the engine will not start or may start intermittenly.

SOURCE: Please Help 2002 Stratus Coupe Dies While Driving

I would say to have your egr valve checked. Sometimes in these Dodge brands they will get clogged and the air can't flow right. One way you can check if this is happening while driving is to watch your rpms. If they drop a bit then come back up I would assume that is the cause, although I don't remember the radio dying any time his has happened.

06 bug drains battery over night

On most 12v cars, the #1 cause is a light left on somewhere in the vehicle.#2 cause is a bad diode in the alternator and #3 is a bad battery which self discharges and is usually over 5 years old.
An easy first step is to disconnect the charged battery over night. If it still has a full charge the next morning, after you reconnect it and if the car starts, you can rule out the battery as the culprit. Now,if the battery passed the first test, now we go onto #2 test and disconnect the alternator output wire from the alternator overnight. If the battery still has a full charge the next day we will now know the alternator has a bad diode and will need to be repaired/replaced.If the battery was found to be low on charge the next morning with the alternator disconnected we will now have to go on to test #3 to find the drain in the vehicle. Disconnect the positive battery cable and place a 12v regular bulb type test light between the positive cable and the battery positive post. You should have a bright light on the test light if you have a drain in the vehicle from the battery.(don't worry about a dim light as electronics need a little memory voltage) We are looking only for a bright light. With the key off (as it would be overnight) you are now going to remove one fuse at a time while watching the brightness level of the test light.Take one fuse out, look at the light and if no change in brightness put the fuse back in and on to the next fuse, one by one until you see the light go out or dim.The fuse that dims or removes the bright test light will be the circuit that is draining your battery. Now you have your "battery drain" circuit identified and can inspect/repair the item/items on that circuit.
REMEMBER an open door, trunk or hood may cause a FALSE bright light on your test light because of courtesy light switches and alarm switches so manually close those switches if you need to keep one of the doors or hood/trunk open to gain access to the multiple fuse boxes in many vehicles.
DO NOT TURN ON THE KEY during this test, as all power to the vehicle is now going through the test light and things won't be happy if you do.

Battery drains over night. have checked fuses, alternator. this is a new battery. could it be side post? have replaced one of them.

Well, a bad connection anywhere on the car would not use power from the battery if everything is switched off. But it could be difficult to start if one of the battery connections is faulty.
If the battery voltage is below 12 after sitting overnight, you have a component or short that is using power. You would need to check the battery voltage with the cables connected and also disconnected.

Why does my 96 Cadillac Eldorado battery keep discharging?

First step have the battery tested, a bad cell can cause a internal drain and kill the battery, if the batt is ok then check for interior lights like visors that stay on or interior light that come on by themselves at night due to defective door switches.

Hello, sounds like you need a new battery. As the battery goes flat the alarm senses it and sets off the warning system. Try changing the battery first and test it during the day. Also check to see if there is anything draining the power. You may also be able to adjust the alarm settings manually. Failing that, the alarm may need replacing. I hope I have helped.

The unfortunate thing is diagnostics DOES TAKE TIME. You need to set aside the time to be accurate.

Something for sure is draining the battery and methodical diagnosis is the only way to get it figured out. IF there were an open in the alternator to battery circuit, the new alternator would be damaged.

Pull the interior light and radio fuses, disconnect the negative battery and put a test light or volt meter in series with the cable and battery terminal. I expect the light will be lit or the voltage to be above .2 volts draw.... Disconnect the battery, remove one component, connect the battery test setup, and see if voltage drops or light goes out..... when it does, you have the offending system, so investigate that.

Be sure that you can garantee good ground between battery and everything....especially the engine.

This should be done with everything turned off and the door closed. with negative battery disconnected. place 12 v test light between the battery terminal and the cable end.(on neg. side) if the light lites up there is a drain. remove one fuse at a time until u see the lite go out. that is the sytem the drain is on. usually glove box light or trunk light or visor light left on or stuck on.

Well, if the alternator belt squeaks a little, it cannot be actually charging properly, resolve that...

First steps would be to fully charge the battery and measure the voltage. Turn of vehicle Disconnect the negative terminal overnight, for a night or two.

If battery still dead, focus on the battery.
If battery is not dead, put a volt meter between the negative terminal and cable and measure voltage... do not be mislead by interior lights, or clock, pull those fuses, during testing...

Anyways, keep going until you find a drain.

The alternator has diodes that can cause a drain...disconnect for testing purposes...

NEVER run the vehicle with the battery cable dicsonnected.
