Most ECM controlled engines have an EGR (exhaust gas recirculating valve) system. It is sued to lean out mixture with inert gases ( exhaust gas)/re-burn exhaust gases to meet pollution requirements.

I have a 1994 olds with a 3.1 and I have oil coming from the egr valve anything wrong with it????

The egr valve would usually connect the intake and the exhaust manifolds together, often via internal drillings in the cylinder head. An egr valve can be automatic and self-contained or operated by electric or vacuum via the the engine management. Feeding a percentage of exhaust gas into into the intake under certain conditions reduces dangerous exhaust emissions.

Sometimes with diesel engines the pipes, ports and the valve itself become blocked with oily carbon and it isn't unusual to find some free oil in there too but that doesn't usually happen with petrol engines.

I am not sure why you have oil in your car egr valve but I would guess there is a problem needing further investigation.

EGR valve is usually vacuum controlled because of the high temp that is fed through it.

When engine cold idle ok drive and engine warm taking foot of petrol car cuts out

Sound to me like a faulty EGR Valve. If the valve is stuck open. But, before changing anything, please make sure you have no air leak from any of your vacuum hoses.

Egr fault code p0401

Hi there:

In fixing this code, it is quite common for people to just replace the EGR valve only to have the OBD code return. The EGR valve is not always the culprit.

  • Use a vacuum pump and pull the EGR valve open while monitoring engine RPM's & DPFE voltage. There should be a noticable difference in RPM's with the EGR open
  • Clean out the EGR valve and/or tubing to remove deposits
  • Check the voltage at the DPFE, compare to specified values (refer to a repair manual for your specific model)
  • Replace the DPFE sensor (with a good quality / OEM one)
  • Replace the EGR valve

Hope this helps.

Where is the egr valve

Hi there:There is no EGR on the Duratec engine used in the X-Type petrol engines. These duratecs have VVT which, along with several other benefits, eliminates the need for an EGR.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.
