Hi.

First of all most of the codes you posted are companion codes (OEM if I remember), I would check with some OBDII scanner for the generic codes (For instance : P0447) first then I can give you a hand. That way I can direct my diagnosis on the correct circuit or component.

The scanner said, No comm. between ECM and IPM. ECM detected it could not communicate with injection pump module #1 failed injection pump module #2 open or shorted circuit condition

Thank you for your prompt answer.

First of all, if you have a failed injection pump module, that will be a costly repair. If you got some DIY talent i could send you an elecrical schematic of your fuel injection system and you could do some test, i wouldn't be suprised that the module itself if not the problem but rather a corroded power wire or broken/damaged data line or some water managed to get into the module and fried part of the PCB. I'll look it up for you tommorow, once i get access to my Alldata subscription at the garage

Thanks,I'm sure I could read the schematic.I cleaned the under hood grounds today but still no good. The truck runs as good as ever. Could this be, with a bad IPM ? I suspect corrosion because the truck is rusty.

  • Samuel Gagnon Nov 24, 2014

You're right, a faulty ground can cause the MIL to trigger with a bad IPM code since the module has a bad/corroded ground connection. By the way, i'm assuming you truck is a Diesel 5.9L L6 (6 in line cylinders) with an automatic transmission, is that correct?. Also i's still like to know the P chart code (P0447 is an example of what i mean) you got so i can look up a diagnosis procedure. I'm also curious to know why when you turn the headlight on, the engine dies. It looks like a short circuit between the IPM and the headlamp which is strange since the wires splices are rather far appart from each other. Something that could link the symptom and the cause would be an alternator on it's way out ; it cannot supply enough current then the battery will slowly drain and might cause the IPM to run low on voltage and shut down. If the fuel pump stop, well, the engine run out of fuel logicaly. By the way, i printed the entire engine control diagram, your IPM is on the 3th page. Hope that helped you!

samuel, thanks, but I can't enlarge the schematics. the code I found today was P0232 my book says fuel shutoff signal voltage too high.

I'm starting to suspect the ignition switch. The "lights on" alarm only beeps once when you turn the lights on with the key out and door open. It used to beep until you turned lights off.

  • Samuel Gagnon Nov 25, 2014

I though so about the diagrams, i'm limited to 500 ko per photo. I could send the originals, which are more than big enough to be printed afterwards, to your E-mail adress if you don't mind. Also, what are the rest of the P codes you got? Maybe it is not the ignition switch but the Instrument cluster itself, the chime that beep when the door is open is usualy located there and most of the time the Instrument clucter usualy relays some information (crank position, transmission output shaft speed and maybe some IPM info etc..) to the Engine control module (ECM) Via the datalines, if your cluster's microprocessor is failing it could cause some weird symptoms. I know that Chrysler (Dodge, Jeep) control their alternator output current with the ECM, so if the communication between the alternator and the ECM is absent because of a failed Instrument cluster, that can cause the altenator issue I described earlier. I've seen something similar with a 2004 Toyota Matrix, the cluster failed and the transmission started shifting roughly ans poorly because the vehicle speed sensor could not communicate to the ECM. To be honest, as an automotive technician, it's rather difficult to point you in a precise direction since i did not see the symptoms nor performed some tests.

The first thing I would do is check the alternator for output. It should be about 13.5 volts at idle. Then have someone turn on the headlights and see what the reading is. It should drop some momentarily but should go back up to your original reading. Use a separate ammeter, not the one on the dash to get an accurate reading. I would suspect there is a problem in your alternator, likely a burnt diode, or wearing out, but it may also be the belt is loose, not enough tension. Insufficient power from your charging system could give the codes you are seeing. Uf there isn't sufficient power for the truck to run with the lights on then the ECM and IPM would not be able to communicate.

Idle may be too low. A lock screw is at the back of the P7100 mechanical engines, or 12 valve engines. If VP44 or 24 valve you need a dealer to change idle in the ecm. good luck...
