Use professional quality oil filters. While purchasing economy oil filters may save a few dollars, you will be greeted on cold starts by a rattling noise that continues until the engine reaches operating temperature. All oil filters are not made the same. If you were to dissect quality oil filters, such as a MotorCraft, Wix or the Napa Gold Line model, you would see an anti-flowback valve installed within the filter. The purpose of this valve is to keep the oil in the engine's top end after the engine is shut down. By doing so, the valve train is lubricated instantly at start up, instead of seconds later after the oil pump has circulated the oil from the oil pan to the top of the engine. Dissect a cheap oil filter and essentially what you will find is a filter medium akin to a coffee filter, wadded inside a tin can. If you notice the ticking sound on start up, make sure to change your oil as soon as possible and use a good-quality oil filter.
Protect the engine with the factory-recommended-weight oil to keep valve ticking noises at bay. Your 5.4-liter left the factory with 5W-20 or 5W-30 semi-synthetic oil in the engine. Use of thicker oils, such as 10W-30 or 20W-50, no matter the climate, can overwork the engine's top end as it attempts to work with the thicker oil coursing through it. Once you have installed the thicker oil, you will most likely experience a ticking noise that does not dissipate when the engine reaches operating temperature. The longer the engine is operated with the wrong oil, the louder the noise will get. The synchronizer, which controls the timing for the top end, will ultimately become damaged and need to be replaced. As soon as you discover this ticking noise and know you have used the thicker oils, have the oil replaced immediately with the recommended weight.

Can you mix engine oil

Hi Marsha, Many people mix brands of oil specified for either petrol engines and the same is true for oils specified for diesel engines if topping up, but it's not a good idea....It is a very bad idea to use an oil specified for one type of engine in the other. I would suggest never mixing oil manufactured for a diesel engine in a petrol engine or visa versa. The reason is that the diesel engine is dirtier than a petrol engine and manufactures of oil formulate it to have more cleaning chemicals than that used in petrol engines....Mixing the two can result in a build up of sludge which can actually block the lubrication system of the engine causing in some cases severe damage. Regards John

Oil light comes on when driving on motorway but not round town, oil level was high had oil change last week, before that it was fine lights didnt come on, does it come on because oil level is high, can i...

Oil light will only come on when the sensor does not detect oil flow. You may have a circulation issue not allowing oil to return to oil pan quick enough to keep up on motorway. Have valve covers removed and check for build up at oil return ports in top of head(s)

Car using a lot of oil and going out of tailpipe

Back to what I said before, only perhaps it didn't get really hot. Only two major causes of oil burning. 1. rings and cylinder walls are worn or 2. bearings are a bit out of clearance and throwing more oil on the cylinder walls than the oil rings can deal with. Other reason should have been taken care of when head was done: valve guides & seals. You can still read good compression with certain conditions. a more accurate test is a cylinder leakdown test. On another idea, if one cylinder was being washed down by coolant, it may have unseated the rings. sometimes they recover from this, sometimes not (likely in the cylinder with warped valves. Check that plug for oil fouling...could be where miss is.

VW Golf 2001, V4 Oil tank is empty approxi after 2000 miles

Because your car is consuming so much oil, you need to check the level often, so the level won't go down more than one quart. You will get an idea how long you can drive the car before it is down one quart, and should keep the level at the full mark. You should change the oil filter, as it is still collecting contaminants.
Have you checked the spark plugs condition? It seems the oil consumption will result in the plugs being fouled soon . Keep that oil level up, or the result will be a seized engine. Also, I'm guessing the tail pipe shows black residue, another sign of high oil consumption. This is probably why someone sold this car, they didn't want to deal with an expensive repair of an engine rebuild. You are correct, an oil change should be done every 3k miles.
