What seam's to be the problem ? Would hate for you to replace the switch an have it not fix the problem .

Principles of Operation
Transfer Case - Electronic Shift
The four-wheel drive, electronic shift-on-the-fly feature electrically shifts the vehicle transfer case between 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, and 4X4 LOW. The system mode is selected by the operator through the mode select switch (MSS) on the instrument panel. The operator is informed which mode the system is in by two instrument cluster indicators, one for 4X4 HIGH which is 4X4, and one for 4X4 LOW which is LOW RANGE (in 4X4 LOW both the lamps are on). Shifts into 4X4 HIGH can be made at any speed. When shifting into 4X4 HIGH with the vehicle stationary, tooth blockage may occur, preventing shift completion. When the vehicle is driven above 8 km/h (5mph) the shift will complete. When shifting in or out of 4X4 LOW, the generic electronic module (GEM) requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal be applied, and the transmission in NEUTRAL (automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal be depressed (manual transmission). (The digital transmission range [TR] sensor informs the GEM when the automatic transmission is in the NEUTRAL range position.)
The gearmotor encoder assembly is mounted externally on the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and the range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD range positions.
The GEM uses two relays to control the gearmotor encoder assembly shift between 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW, and 2WD modes. The GEM controls the pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid which supplies engagement and disengagement vacuum to control the hublocks.
The GEM accomplishes shifts by interpreting inputs from:
  • mode select switch (MSS)
  • vehicle speed signal (transmitted from the ABS system)
  • gearmotor encoder plate position
  • brake pedal switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission)
  • clutch pedal position (CPP) switch (manual transmission)
  • ignition switch
Based on these inputs, the GEM controls the shifts into 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, or 4X4 LOW with the following outputs:
  • low to high relay (clockwise)
  • high to low relay (counterclockwise)
  • pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoid
  • gearmotor encoder assembly
The electronic shift-on-the-fly (ESOF) system has a feature which allows the driver to override the vacuum operated hublocks. When the front hublocks are manually turned to the LOCK position, the hublocks are locked at all times, overriding the vacuum operated system. If the front hublocks are manually turned to the AUTO position, the hublocks can only be locked by turning the MSS to 4X4 HIGH or 4X4 LOW position.

Stoplamps
The stoplamps are part of the rear lamp assembly. When the brake pedal is applied, the stoplamp switch supplies voltage to the generic electronic module (GEM) and the high mounted stoplamp. The GEM then supplies voltage to the rear lamps.

Turn Signal Lamps and Hazard Warning Lamps
The turn signal lamps and hazard warning lamps system consists of:
  • Hazard switch
  • Multifunction switch
  • GEM
  • Turn signal lamps
When the multifunction switch is placed in the LH or RH turn positions, a voltage signal from the GEM is routed to ground. When the GEM detects the multifunction switch in the LH or RH turn position, the GEM supplies voltage to the appropriate turn lamps in a flashing manner. When operating correctly, the turn lamps flash approximately 80 times per minute.
When the hazard warning switch (located in the upper part of the center console) is switched on, a voltage signal from the GEM is routed to ground. When the GEM detects that the hazard switch is switched on, the GEM supplies voltage to all the turn signal lamps in a flashing manner. When operating correctly, the hazard lamps flash approximately 80 times per minute.

How about the wiper high / low relay or the wiper Park relay . Not to mention but the relays are controlled by the GEM - generic electronic module . Do you know about that ? Do you know how to do voltage testing ? Suggest you go http://bbbind.com/free_tsb.html free wiring diagrams . Go on youtube check out videos on basic electrical trouble shooting , how to read a wiring diagram , voltage drop testing , electronic control module testing -checking for codes . Not engine computer codes. would need a professional type scan tool . An these codes have nothing to do with the check engine light . Are the inputs from the wiper/washer switch getting to the GEM ? There is a lot going on in the wiper system of your vehicle , I suggest you take it to a Qualified repair shop .

4x4 low light on car will not move

Power door locks stopped working.


GEM stands for generic electronic module ,has nothing to do with the engine . The power door locks are controlled by the GEM energizing relays ! lock unlock relays . unplugging the GEM will do nothing . Testing the vehicle electric's and checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes is the first steps in diagnosing a problem of this type . Your best bet would be to take to a qualified repair shop . You have not the diagnostic tool or knowledge to diagnose this problem . Do yourself a favor before you make the problem worst . Messing with thing's you have no clue about can render your vehicle useless .

Gem Module, Fuse Box and Window Reseal


This 1997 Ford F150 needs the GEM module changed due to multiple conditions. To see testing that lead to this repair please click here. The GEM module is located t the rear of the interior fuse box.

The first step is to remove the trim panel that covers the gap between the upper side of the steering column and the dash. It just unsnaps from the dash. It makes it a little easier to remove if you move the shifter all the way down to drive 1.

With that out of the way the lower dash cover can now be removed. Most of the screws have 7 mm heads but there are two that have 8 mm heads.

Those two are at the lower edge of the fuse box.

One wiring harness needs to be disconnected from the panel.

Now the screws for the fuse box can be removed.

The wiring harnesses can be removed from the back of the fuse box. Two 10 mm headed bolts at the center of each connector.

Next remove the tube brace from around the bottom of the steering column. Four fasteners with 13 mm heads.

Now wiggle, pry and twist the fuse box and GEM module assembly down.

After the assembly is down far enough unplug the remaining harness connectors from the GEM module.

The assembly is now free of the vehicle.

The GEM module is held to the back of the fuse box by three phillips headed screws.

With the three screws removed the GEM unplugs from the back of the fuse box.

I put it all back together and checked my repair for power to the driver's power window switch.

I have a 2000 ford mustang. Suddenly my keyless entry remote stopped working. I replaced the battery and turned the off and on 8 times and the locks cycled. after which i pushed the unlock but nothing...


The keyless entry system is controlled by the (GEM) - generic electronic module .
Keyless Entry The electronic door lock system has two main components:
  • generic electronic module (GEM)(14B204)
  • keyless entry remote transmitter (15K601)
  • NOTE: Battery power and ground must be remove before disconnecting the GEM connectors to avoid setting false codes.
    Power Locks Operation The power locks feature allows the customer to lock and unlock the doors via momentary switches located on the driver and passenger door. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger lock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger lock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM. When the GEM detects a momentary press of the driver or passenger unlock button, the GEM will supply power to the driver or passenger unlock actuators for approximately 250 ms from relays internal to the GEM.
    Remote Keyless Entry Door Locks Operation The remote entry feature allows the customer to unlock the driver door, unlock all doors, and lock all doors using a valid remote transmitter as long as the ignition switch is not in RUN or START. The driver door is unlocked whenever the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission. All the doors are unlocked when the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter unlock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission. All the doors are locked when the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission. If the GEM detects a second valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of the first transmission, the doors will lock again, the horn will sound for 20 ms and the parking lamps will flash for 200 ms to indicate the doors are locked. If the GEM detects the driver or passenger door is ajar during the second lock transmission, the doors are locked again and the horn is sounded twice. If the GEM detects a valid remote transmitter lock transmission within three seconds of detecting a valid remote transmitter unlock transmission, the GEM will lock all the doors
    • The doors do not lock/unlock using the remote transmitter
    • Ignition switch.

    You followed the program instructions to the letter ? Programming -Keyless Entry Remote Transmitter NOTE: All keyless entry remote transmitters (15K601) must be programmed at the same time.
    NOTE: All previous transmitter identification codes (TIC's) will be erased when programming mode is entered.
    NOTE: To program (or reprogram) the keyless entry remote transmitters into the generic electronic module (GEM)(14B204), perform the following steps.
    1. Turn the ignition from OFF to RUN eight times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN. If the GEM has successfully entered program mode, it will lock and unlock all the doors.
    1. NOTE: The first TIC must be entered within 7.5 seconds of entering the program mode and additional TICs must be entered within 7.5 seconds of the first TIC. The programming mode is exited whenever the timing constraints are not met.
      Press any button on a keyless entry remote transmitter, and the doors will lock and then unlock to confirm that each keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed.
    1. If the door locks do not respond for any keyless entry remote transmitter, wait for several seconds and press the button again.
    1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, or wait up to five minutes after step 1, to exit program mode. If a keyless entry remote transmitter has been programmed (or reprogrammed), the GEM will lock and unlock all the doors one last time.
