Check to be sure transmission is properly grounded to negative battery terminal measure resistance from negative battert T to transmission housing , and it should be close to zero. If not check for rust on terminals from battery to car chassis and from engine / transmission to chassis. If necessary run a new wire to bypass ols wiring ! After this checks out you need to test signals going to transmission.

The most common whining noise from that tranny is the transmission pump. Sometimes they have a high pitch whine noise yet nothing wrong its normal. Sometimes its an indication of the pump being over-worked due to a dirty filter or fluid low. Turn engine on and check tranny fluid level. If low add to cold mark on dipstick, check for leaks under vehicle. If fluid appears very black or burnt smell, recommend flushing fluid and replacing filter (located inside tranny pan) yours will be a 4L60E type tranny.

Well if sounds like possible a vacuum modulator or if the fluid and filter haven't been changed in say 40,000 miles or more I would recommend changing the tranny fluid and tranny filter.

The 1997 Chevy Malibu does not have a dipstick for the transmissi

Your gonna have to get under the car and find the bolt thats on the transmission on the driver side take it out while car is running and if any fluid comes out like a trickle its full. If not I believe to fill look under the hood and should have a red cap I believe the cap is somewhere under the brake master cylinder

99 Chevy Malibu - auto trans - no dipstick

You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

Looking for a picture for you.
