Question about Ford F-150

1 Answer

95 Ford f150 5.0. When weather is cold takes several trys to get started and have to play with throttle to keep running. Barely runs till up to normal temps but rarely runs good. Idle surges and truck will frequently die mostly when putting it in gear but also at stops. Fuel milage has dropped to around 6mpg. Engine light comes on randomly for a moment every once in awhile. Has no power below about 2200 rpm then sometimes just takes off till gear change and drops back down. While at cruising speed will sometimes start to buck some while on throttle. Have replaced TPS, idle controll, air flow sensor, ignition conttoll module, cant find any vacume leaks. Last time I tryed to get codes it wouldnt give any at all. Before that i kept getting Spout circuit failure and it pings pretty good under throttle. Any help would be greatly appreciated, its driving me crazy and the mpg is killing me.

The detonation (pinging) is an indication that the fuel/air mixture ratio is out ( lean) or the timing is wrong (too far advanced). The mixture is set by both the HO2S sensor and the O2 sensor so check them out for failure. If it is a V engine check out all 4 units. The timing may indicate a faulty ignition module so look in that area for the hard starting. There will be codes stored but you may have to get an expert to connect the data link correctly top get the CPU to read out Different systems, different leads ,different pin connections

O2 sensor has been replaced and it did not help problem at all. The ignition controll has also been replaced and it helped slightly as in i can drive now with spout circuit plug in. I have pulled the codes before key on, running and memory but last time i tryed it wouldnt do anything. I always got a spout circuit failure code and dont know what is causing that. It will randomly just smooth out and idle fine at times.

the O2 sensor is after the cat converter and only fine tunes the ECM. There are 2 mixture sensors for the cat converter and by only replacing one (probably not the faulty one ) then you are only randomly trying to fix it. The term "spout" is a local term so will you explain what you mean and where on the car is it situated. Remember that terminology for cars is the same as that for medicine and if used correctly thyen mechanics around the world will know what you are talking about

"Spout ciruit" is ford motor co term. I dont remember the code number but that is how it is stated in code book. It is an electrical timing advance system. You have to remove the spout jumper plug to set inital timing and with it out you have no advance. My truck only has 1 o2 sensor on it

Thank you for that enlightening piece if information. The spout wire is connected to the ECM which advances/ retards the timing in response to engine rpms and throttle settings. Similar controle to when you throw away a distributor and install an electronic distributor which has this "spout system" already built in. You state that you keep getting a spout circuit failure and now knowing what it does I would be paying serious attention to that unit and replacing it. It will cause the pinging and by not having the correct ignition timing then it will cause your problems.

There is no module for the spout circuit hence the issue finding the cause. It is connected to the ICM but i have replaced that anf it did not fix problem. There is a timing pickup in the distributor, from my research, that can go bad i just was hoping someone might have experience this prob before i drop $100+ on a new distrubutor

Engine will not idle and run when starting in cold weather

Have a mechanic take a look at your throttle position sensor and engine idle sensor. Make him manually adjust them as opposed to just putting in new ones. It may require that you have to have a higher idle than normal. Your underlying cause is going to be that I am sure you have a lot of miles on your engine.
