Question about 2004 Dodge Dakota
Remove the transmission oil pan, it is messy. No drain plug. After that remove the fluid filter. Then you will see the valve body. This is what holds all the solenoids. On one side of the valve body there will be two solenoids that are the same, both close together. The 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift solenoids. The are held in with clips. Look at it and you will see them. pull the clip and pull the solenoid out. don't lose the clip. Just a note though. If some one told you the codes and didn't diagnose the problem, you could be throwing away $100. It could be the wiring harness in the transmission, or wiring on the out side of the transmission. Or the transmission control module.

When I do those I find it's easier to get some of the stuff out of the way. Fan shroud, Alternator, AC compressor(don't remove AC hoses just swing it over to the side) and the AC/alternator mount bracket. If you don't have the special hose clamp plyers they are worth buying. (those clamps are difficult with regular plyers) The fan clutch has a special wrench which is thinner. When you start the job break loose the fan clutch before you remove the belt. It keeps tension on the pulley. The nut is normal threading and usually comes loose with a sharp rap of the hammer on the fan clutch wrench.
Here is an illustration of the water pump bolts. I hope this helps you out. let me know how it goes.
