Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

If my top radiator hose gets hot but not my bottom one does this mean my thermostat is bad

Just added antifreeze. checked the bottom hose and it was cold. touched the top one and it's hot.

I don't know how did you test your radiator but if you apply below steps you can clarify your problem easier.

If you want to test your radiator:
A) Park your car (it takes more longer to get real temperature values, if the car is moving)
B) Start the engine (don't forget to engage handbrake)
C) Wait around 10 to 15 minute
D) If your top radiator hose gets hot and bottom radiator hose gets warm; your radiator is functional. (In few minutes your radiator fan suppose to work)

If bottom radiator hose is still cold, it means there is a problem at thermostat. If you see any leakage at thermostat housing at the end of above step C, you need to renew thermostat housing gasket too. Even if you buy new thermostat, i suggest you to test it before assembly. If new thermostat doesn't open enough, your car may run so hot.

If you would like to test your thermostat:
A) Boil water in disposable bowl (thermostat may exposure chemical substances)
B) Put thermostat into boiling water.
C) If thermostat opens totaly, it is ready for assembly.

What would be leaking under my radiator on the drivers side?


It sounds like your thermostat is stuck closed. Your thermostat also acts as a heater valve to let hot coolant go to your heater core to blow hot air if your thermstat is stuck close it prevents your coolant to run through your radiator to cool down and to blow hot air from your heater core. A way to check to see if your thermostat is working while its at operating temp feel the bottom and top radiator hose if your lower hose is cold and top is hot your thermo is stuck closed but be careful hoses might be very hot

Top half or Radiator is hot while the bottom half remains cold . Is this normal


This can be due to one of a few different things...First of all, water flows from the engine to the bottom of the radiator, using the water pump and gravity, and the water returns from the radiator back into the engine on the top side.

Thermostat isn't opening...this causes the water / antifreeze to remain in the engine, and not flow through to the radiator. If the water / antifreeze gets hot enough, it should activate the thermostat and water should flow into the radiator through the bottom radiator hose.

The bottom radiator hose is either worn out (there is a spring inside the length of the bottom hose. it is there to keep the hose from collapsing under the suction pressure during normal use) If the hose feels spongy, soft, or shows signs of cracking, replace it.

The radiator may be clogged, preventing the water from flowing freely through all of the 'fins' in the grill section of the radiator. Hot water usually isn't just in the top section during a clogged radiator situation...

Radiator is either clogged,or it's bad. You could also check the heater core.

I mixed antifreez when coolant was low only about 2 quarts and after maybe 100 miles iot stared over heating should i empty all the coolant out and put orignal back ?


Generally the ratio of antifreeze to water depends on the severity of the cold that your car is likely to encounter. A ratio of of one part antifreeze to two parts water should suffice for most cases. The antifreeze should be added premixed with the water: just adding neat antifreeze to the engine first and then adding water will result most of the antifreeze settling to the bottom of the engine and taking a very long time to mix. That all said I think your overheating issue is not to do with the antifreeze itself. Are you loosing coolant? Check that the coolant filler cap is on tightly and that its seal is in good condition. Most coolant systems become pressurised when hot. If the cap is not on securely pressure cannot build up and overheating can occur. Also check that no air pockets are trapped in the system. Put the heating on inside the car to full and squeeze the top radiator hose occasionally as the car warms up. Incidentally, this putting on the internal heater to full can be a good emergency step to take if stuck in traffic and the engine starts to boil. If you are not loosing coolant but the car overheats this is a sign that maybe the thermostat is not opening when it should and perhaps ought to be replaced. If your car is very hot/overheated switch it off and check the radiator bottom hose, careful it should be too hot to touch. If it is just mildly warm then this is another bit of evidence that thermostat is faulty. A further check is to remove the thermostat. Fill a clear jug with boiling water from the kettle and lower the thermostat into it. It should pop open but after a few minutes pop closed again even though the water will still be very hot. Most thermostats open in the 84 to 87 degree centigrade range. If your thermostat fails to do anything then it needs to be replaced. If the bottom hose is hot then water is circulating and the thermostat is most likely working. Check that the radiator fan is running. If your car is fitted with an electric fan these are triggered to work by a thermostatic switch. If it fails to come on then either the fan motor is dead or the switch is not working. The switch can be checked easily by testing for electrical continuity when it is hot. If the fan is activated by a thermal clutch and it fails to engage when hot then it is the clutch that has failed.

Running hot


Too many possibilites. Even old spark plugs can make it run hot. Slipping belts also possible. Bad thermostat is common. Retarded ignition timing can do it. Problems with the radiator fan motor/relay/sensor can do it. Low coolant is possilbe. Head gasket is worst case scenario. I would not suggest a flush this new. But you could run a pressure check on the radiator. See if it holds pressure. Also verify with a thermometer, because the gauge could be off instead.

When the truck is cold, with the engine off open the hood and search for for the upper radiator hose, look for a place on the hose to put your hand on it, a place that it's not close to any moving parts, (radiator's fan, and pulleys in front of the engine) now that you have fine a good spot on the hose to check the thermostat, go ahead star the engine and just wait while you keep your hand on the hose.
Ones the thermostat gets hot, it will open letting hot antifreeze flow into the radiator that's when your hand will feel this hot change on the radiator hose. It's a good time to take a look to your temperature gauge, it's too hot or too cold?
if the gauge moves higher than normally does, and you didn't feel a hot change on the hose, that means you have a bad thermostat that it's not opening on time or it's not opening at all,
if the gauge it's below than normally does, that means the thermostat it's open all the time

Radiator problems


it may be a little off, but the lower water hose seldom gets very hot,, as its this hose that suplyes the engine with ""cold water"" the hot water comes out the top hose,, drains down the rad and cools on the way down then enters the engine through the bottom hose """if your engine stayes running in the normal place on the gage,,,and not over heating""" why are you spending money for nothing???""
you wont get the bottom hose to run hot unless the engine is cooking
