Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

@EdCarCal. I had it read at a garage and the only thing it reads is evap system. Had done smoke test, replaced lines, egr valve, gas cap, cracked or bad vacuum lines, tune up,and transfer case solenoid. Next to replace for that is gas filler tube. Wondering if four wheel drive issue is transfer case accuator on top of transfer case or computer related. I don't know,at a liss. Mechanic is stumped. Also changed module located behind cigarette lighter.

Evap system has many parts , cannister, vent and purge valves ,fuel tank and cap, first is the fuel cap on and is the seal in good shape. You will need to inspect all vauum hoses that leave the cannister if all ok then get the valve and solenoid tested for stuck open

Where is my evap located on a 1998 pontiac grand prix

which part of the evap system are you looking for. there are several components in your evap system. if you are looking for the evap canister it is located near the rear of the vehicle either on drivers side near the gas tank or just in front of the gas tank. it is a black plastic box with usually 2 vacuum lines running into it. if you are going off an evap leak engine code start with a new gas cap. a bad seal on a gas cap can cause the computer to read an evap leak. if that doesnt work then you may need to have a smoke test done at a local garage. basically they fill the evap system with smoke with a special machine then look for the smoke to appear from the leak in the system. again the evap system consists of several components that run from the engine to the gas tank. it circulates the vapor fumes from the gas back to the tank to be reburned so it does not get released into the atmosphere.

Code p0442

2005 Galant with code po442 this code is for an evap leak, a small leak, check the gas cap for any cracks in the oring and then you will need to check the evap lines, these line sometimes crack and allow vacuum to leak, this system is computer controlled to allow venting or purging.
most of the time a small evap leak may be due to a bad gas cap but other times it could be a line or rusted filler neck or other problems. the best way to find such a leak would be with an evap smoke machine, thee machine pumps smoke into fuel tank and lines for evap system and with vent valve shut the system should be air tight, then you look for smoke and where smoke is that is your leak, most repair shops have the machine, note : some leaks are so small the smoke can not be seen ,at this point soap water in a spray bottle is helpful, spray lines and other areas to see bubbles.

I have a code po455

this is a code that indicates a large evap leak. this can be caused by allot of things. things like loose or bad gas caps, leaking evap line. bad vent sol. bad puge valve. this requires a high end scan tool and a smoke machine to isolate the problem. first thing to look at, check gas cap for being tight. also look at the seal on gas cap and make sure it has no cracks in it.

The "Service Engine Soon" light

These are both EVAP emissions codes. The first thing I would do is open the fuel door and take a good wiff. If you smell gas replace the fuel cap.

If you don't smell gas the next thing you can do is visually inspect all the EVAP hoses and lines for cracks or holes. The EVAP system consists of a purge solenoid, a charcoal canister, a vent solenoid, a fuel tank pressure sensor, and misc. lines and hoses. All of these will need to be visually checked for damage.

If you don't see anything with a visual check than the next step would be to have the EVAP system smoke checked for leaks. A smoke machine will be used to slightly pressurize the EVAP system with smoke. Where ever the smoke comes out is where is is leaking.

04' Pontiac Grand Am engine code P0455

Hello and welcome. this code is for a large evap system leak. basically what this means, there is a fuel vapor leak in the system. this can be caused by several things, a vent valve leaking, a purge valve leaking, charcoal cansister leaking or any one of the vapor lines. even a bad gas cap can cause this code to set and turn on the check engine light. to test this system requires a special machine called a smoke tester and a scan tool. I would suggest first, checking the gas cap, make sure it is good and tight. if it is, take the gas cap off and look at the seal. if the seal looks like it is split or cracked, you may just want to replace the gas cap and see what happens.

Service engine light comes on at 1/2 tank. Sometimes prompts me to tighten fuel cap. Have replaced with new OEM fuel cap.

Hello and welcome. this indicates a problem with the evap system, which a gas cap can be the problem, along with allot of more causes. could be a bad gas cap, vent sol. purge valve or one of the evap lines leaking. two things that need to be done to help find the problem. first thing, have the system scanned for trouble codes, the system will store trouble codes. this helps in isolating the problem. the second thing, is to have the fuel tank system smoke tested. this will will isolate the evap leak.

Small evap leak

this could be due to a cracked line for the evap or a bad vent valve or bad purge valve, check all the evap lines closely for cracks, this would be better with an evap machine, you would be able to smoke test, this is done by filling the evap system with smoke in order to test for a leak, if it passed the smoke test then the next thing is to test the vent valve to make sure it closes good, this is done with the smoke and by powering the valve shut, and making sure it doesnt leak, most saturns i work on end up with bad vent valves or a cracked line, hope this helps.

My check engine light came on 2003 dodge dakota quad cab awd engine code p0456

This code is normally caused by a loose gas cap or a bad EGR valve. It is the code for the evap system on your truck. You can go to autozone and they will clear the code for you if you can not do it yourself. You may need to replace the gas cap and or the EGR valve if the code comes back up, these are normally one time things due to the cap not being fully tightened.

2000 cavalier check engine light code po440

P0440 - Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System

evaporative emission (EVAP) system has a large leak.
Check the gas cap or vent valve. these are the most common problems.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at different times performs various tests on the EVAP system. OBD II Enhanced EVAP systems are in place to keep fuel tank vapors from venting into the atmosphere, and instead purges them into the engine to be burned. Regular pressure tests are conducted by the PCM to monitor the sealed system for leaks. The PCM monitors the EVAP system pressure by watching the Fuel tank pressure sensor (FTP). When the sensor indicates a small leak in the EVAP system, this code is set.

Here are some additional causes.

* A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
* A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
* The EVAP Canister may be leaking
