Here is an amazing photo manual of the steering column tear-down to fix actuator on an 85 Bronco. It looks like a big job, though, which is unfortunate because the actuator on my 89 just snapped last week.

SOURCE: Easiest method to reconnect the steering universal

The steering column is connect with a shaft that runs from rack and pinion to steering column. A short shaft sticks out of rack and pinion and is attached to shaft with 1 bolt that goes thru the coupler. Usally hid under a boot that goes around the shaft.

Here you are - power rack & pinion.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.
  6. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the high pressure hoses to the steering gear and install the air cleaner.
  8. Install the intermediate shaft seal and the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Install an engine support fixture J-28467-A, or the equivalent.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from stub shaft.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  1. Remove the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near rear of frame including the brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hangers.
  2. Remove the engine and transaxle mount nuts at the subframe.
  3. Support the rear of the subframe with jack stands.
  4. Remove the rear subframe bolts and discard.
  5. Lower the subframe for access to rack and pinion.
Do not lower the rear of the cradle too far, as damage to engine components nearest the cowl may result.
  1. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the outer tie rod ends and separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a suitable puller.
  2. Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering gear.
  3. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and nuts.

To Install:
  1. Install the rack and pinion through left wheel opening.

  5. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Tighten the castle nuts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  6. Raise the subframe into position and install new frame mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  7. Remove the jack.
  8. Install the engine mount and transaxle mount nuts and tighten to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  9. Install the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near the rear of frame including brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hanger.
  10. Connect the intermediate shaft to the stub shaft and tighten the pinch bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Remove the support fixture.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Refill the power steering reservoir and bleed the system.

  2. Remove engine torque strut from engine.

How to replace rack an pinion cutlass ciera 1992


You aren't saying what engine is in it, or whether it is manual or power steering. Here is the R/R procedure for power steering rack for all engine sizes.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.

How to remove the ignition lock cylinder from a 93 geo storm


is the lock assembly in the car or out?
there are 2 jobs here, removing the assembly
and after that, attacking the lock it self.???????

any lock smith can rebuild the lock, proper
it has pins that are pressed out.
it can even be rekeyed.

the remove assembly is covered in the FSM, no books?
alldata.com covers that.
it really is an Isuzu. impulse.

my guess is its job 1, assembly out.
so toss coin lands on job1
(on most cars, steering wheel must be removed)
once that is done, its obvious from there, right? that clamp there with the antitamper screws? then must be removed. and replaced new..

a rare car , and even more one that runs....

here is the online FSM answer

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the combination switch assembly.
  4. Turn the key to the OFFposition, depress the retaining pin and remove the ignition lock cylinder from the switch.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch.
  6. Remove the snapring and spacer collar from the steering shaft.
  7. Disconnect the back drive cable from the ignition switch.
  8. Remove the ignition switch bolts and the ignition switch from the steering column.


now back in?
  1. Install the ignition switch to the steering column and tighten the bolts.
  2. Connect the back drive cable to the ignition switch.
  3. Install the spacer collar and the snapring to the steering shaft.
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition switch.
  5. Install the lock cylinder into the switch.
  6. Install the turn signal switch screws and the turn signal switch.
  7. Install the four screws and the coil assembly to the turn signal switch.
  8. Connect the coil assembly wiring harness to the turn signal switch.
  9. Install the two piece steering column cover and the two piece steering column cover screws.
  10. Raise the steering column and install the upper steering column mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  11. Install the left lower dash trim panel and tighten the lower dash trim panel screws.
  12. Install the lap air deflector and tighten the lap air deflector screws.
  13. Install the knee pad assembly and tighten the five screws, the bolt and the nut attaching the assembly.
  14. Install the engine hood opener cable.
  15. Install the engine hood opener and tighten the two screws.
  16. Connect the electrical connector to the cigar lighter bezel and install the bezel.
  17. Connect the electrical connector to the left switch bezel and install the bezel.
  18. Install the steering wheel.
  19. Connect the negative battery terminal to the battery.

How do i replace the ignition switch on a opel rekord 1989 model;


on most cars.
remove the screws, in the plastic collar.. (look under there see em'?)
now its all exposed.
next, remove the security screws, from the ignition switch assy, clamp. (some are head less.) having fun yet?
then on some cars the assembly (IGN) will not come off with steering wheel inplace, its obvious at that moment..

the FSM book covers this, in vivid details. (factory service manual)

1993 bronco auto,shifter handle on the column is completely lose and will not engage transmission gears


The nylon bushings and plunger in the shift tube assembly is worn and needs to be replaced... I would replace the whole assy. because it's the best way to get ALL the slack out and they aren't that expensive...The shift tube and plunger work together. After you install the parts you can adjust to where your shift indicator needle is lined up with the letters and numbers on the dash. You have to drop the steering column to get to everything, remember to disconnect the little string that runs from the back of the shifter up to the needle indicator before you lower the column down to rest on the seat...if you don't it will break! I hope this helps...good luck with the Bronco.

How to remove front axle on a 2002 dodge intrepid


raise you vehicle on jackstands. remove front wheel and tire.remove front caliper from steering knuckle assembly, remove rotor from hub by pulling it staright off. remove speed sensor bracket from strut assembly. remove hub and bearing to stub axle retaining nut. dislodge inner CV stub shaft retaining ringon transaxle assembly. insert small pry bar between transaxle case and inner CV joint by prying on it.remove strut assembly to steering knuckle bolts remove top of steering knuckle from strut assembly, then rotate CV assembly out of vehicle. Remove inner shaft from transaxle stub shaft grasp inner CV joint and interconnecting shaft and pull both pieces out at the same time. good luck!

Power Steering Gear
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle, allowing the front suspension to hang
    freely.
  2. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies.
    CAUTION
    Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft
    from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear
    and/or intermediate shaft. This damage may cause a loss of steering control and
    possibly, personal injury.
    NOTE: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the
    steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or
    intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR
    coil assembly to become uncentered, which will damage the coil.




  3. If equipped, move the intermediate shaft cover upward, then unfasten the
    intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  4. Using a suitable puller, separate both tie rod ends from the steering
    knuckles.
  5. Position a suitable drain pan under the power steering fluid lines. Remove
    the power steering fluid line retainer, then disconnect the outlet and inlet
    hoses from the steering gear. Allow the fluid to drain, then plug the lines to
    avoid contaminating the system.

  6. Remove the steering gear assembly-to-chassis mounting bolts.
  7. Support the body with suitable jackstands to allow for the lowering of the
    frame.
  8. Loosen the front frame mounting bolts.
  9. Remove the rear frame bolts, then lower the rear of the frame about 3 inches
    (76mm).
    WARNING
    Do not lower the frame too far, or you could
    damage the engine components nearest the cowl.


  10. Remove the steering gear assembly by maneuvering it through the left wheel
    well opening.

    To install:

  11. Install the rack and pinion assembly into the vehicle, maneuvering it
    through the left wheel well opening.
  12. Raise the rear of the frame, then install the frame bolts and tighten to 76
    ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  13. Install the rack and pinion assembly-to-chassis bolts. Tighten the rack
    mounting bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
  14. Remove the jackstands.
  15. Apply Loctite® thread locking kit 1052624, or equivalent thread locking
    compound to the steering gear mounting bolts.
  16. Install the steering gear mounting bolts, and washers, then tighten the
    retainers to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm) in the sequence shown in the accompanying
    figure.
  17. Unplug and attach the power steering gear outlet and inlet hoses, then
    tighten the fittings to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  18. Install the power steering fluid line retainer.
  19. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Tighten the nuts to 35
    ft. lbs. (47 Nm). Install a new cotter pin. Tighten the nut up to an additional
    1?6 turn,
    or to 52 ft. lbs. (70 Nm) to align the cotter pin slot. Do not loosen the nut to
    install the cotter pin.
  20. Install the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt and tighten to 35
    ft. lbs. (47 Nm). If equipped, move the intermediate shaft cover upward into
    position.
  21. Install both front tire and wheel assemblies, then carefully lower the
    vehicle.
  22. Refill the power steering pump reservoir, then bleed the power steering
    system and check for leaks.
  23. Take the vehicle to a reputable repair shop and have the front end alignment
    checked and adjusted as necessary.

Power Rack and Pinion Steering Gear REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1997 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disarm the air bag system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
  4. Transaxle gearshift cable from the shifter lever
  5. Loosen the gearshift cable-to-transaxle mount bolt
  6. Gearshift cable from the transaxle
  7. Throttle cable from the throttle body, if necessary
  8. Throttle cable bracket
  9. Both wiper arm assemblies from the wiper arm pivots
  10. Cowl closure panel and weather-stripping as an assembly from the cowl
  11. Wiper module wiring harness from the vehicle wiring harness

  13. Air plenum from the throttle body, PCV make up air tube and the idle air control motor. Remove the plenum from the right side of the vehicle through the wiper module area.
  14. Power brake booster vacuum connector at the intake manifold
  15. Turn the front wheels to the full left position. Then, turn the wheels back in the other direction until the roll pin in the lower steering coupler is accessible. Turn the ignition key switch to the LOCK position to keep the steering column from rotating after the coupler is removed from the steering gear. If the steering column shaft rotates beyond the normal number of turns in either direction, the air bag clock spring will be damaged.   16. Using paint, mark the steering coupling and steering gear shaft for orientation. Using the correct size punch, remove the roll pin from the steering coupling.
  17. If equipped, remove the pedal travel sensor from the brake booster as follows:
    1. Pump the brake pedal approximately 20 times. This will bleed the vacuum stored in the booster.
    2. Remove the wiring harness connector from the sensor.
    3. Using a small flat-tipped tool, lift the retainer ring from the notch. Then, remove the retaining ring from the grommet.
    4. Remove the pedal travel sensor from the brake booster by carefully pulling it straight out of its mounting grommet. Do not twist the sensor.
  18. Remove or disconnect the following:
  19. Master cylinder from brake booster with the brake lines connected and position aside
  20. Power steering pressure hose and return hose from the power steering gear
  21. Bend back the tie rods-to-steering gear bolt retaining tabs and remove the bolts
  22. Lay the tie rods, bolts and plate as an assembly on the bell housing of the transaxle.
  23. If the rack and pinion steering gear unit being removed is a speed proportional steering gear, disconnect the vehicle wiring harness from the solenoid control module.
  24. Remove or disconnect the following:
  25. 4 bolts attaching the steering gear assembly to the crossmember. Slide the steering gear forward in the vehicle to disengage the steering coupler from the steering gear shaft. After the gear is disengaged, do not rotate the steering gear shaft
  26. Steering gear assembly from the vehicle through the area in the cowl from which the windshield wiper module was previously removed To install:
  27. If a replacement rack is being installed, grasp the shaft of the steering gear and rotate it until the steering gear center take off is in a full left turn position. Install the steering gear into the vehicle through the wiper module opening in the cowl.
  28. If the original gear is being installed, align the paint mark on the steering coupler with the mark on the steering gear shaft and install the steering gear shaft into the steering gear coupler.
  29. If a replacement rack is being installed, the steering gear shaft and steering coupler must be aligned. Rotate the steering gear shaft back from the full left turn position until the master spline on the steering gear shaft is aligned with the master spline on the steering coupler. At this point, install the steering gear into the coupler.
  30. Align the steering gear with the mounting holes in the crossmember and install the bolts. Be sure the brake line routing clip is installed under the left steering gear mounting bracket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2. Place the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
  3. Place a drain pan under the gear and disconnect the pressure and return lines. Cap the openings.
  4. Remove the splash shield from the flex coupling.
  5. Disconnect the flex coupling at the gear.
  6. Matchmark and remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft.
  7. Support the steering gear and remove the mounting bolts.
  8. Remove the steering gear. It may be necessary to work it free of the flex coupling. To install:
  9. Place the splash shield on the steering gear lugs.
  10. Slide the flex coupling into place on the steering shaft. Make sure the steering wheel spokes are still horizontal.
  11. Center the steering gear input shaft with the indexing flat facing downward.
  12. Slide the steering gear input shaft into the flex coupling and into place on the frame side rail. Install the flex coupling bolt and torque it to 30 ft. lbs.
  13. Install the gear mounting bolts and torque them to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  14. Make sure that the wheels are still straight ahead and install the pitman arm. Torque the nut to the specifications shown in the Torque Chart at the end of this Section.
  15. Connect the pressure, then, the return lines. Torque the pressure line to 25 ft. lbs.
  16. Snap the flex coupling shield into place.
  17. Fill the steering reservoir.
  18. Run the engine and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to expel air. Check for leaks.

1988 bronco ignition actuator broke. Pulled steering wheel,upper collar & electronics. Need to remove tilt portion (bell). How do i do this? Are there any special tools or replacement parts other...


Here is an amazing photo manual of the steering column tear-down to fix actuator on an 85 Bronco. It looks like a big job, though, which is unfortunate because the actuator on my 89 just snapped last week.
