Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

If I have a 1996 ford taurus GL my battery when the car is not started test out putting 12.05 volts which the mechanic at less Schwab said is okay. But when I turn the key the volts drop to 11.55 sometimes even lower. All while the car still won't start up. Does that sound like a alternator issue I ordered one just in case but the mechanic said he didn't have the ability to test my current alternator. Some one who is a expert with cars even fords please shed some light I'm lost

It's normal to drop when the key is turned because your electronics are running like your fuel pump, radio, etc. When you start the car it should jump between 13 and 14 volts when running.

I didn't read your post close enough. Didn't see the part where it doesn't start. Have you tried changing batteries? Sounds like a weak battery to me.

Tapping the starter does not always work. I would check all the connections on the battery and starter. If these are good replace the starter. Don't forget the grounds.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Taurus, 90K, used car, engines shakes, ABS goes on

Are you getting any codes from the Check Engine Light? This sounds like it could have something to do with a sensor. Check your air filter and make sure it's clean. The tach on my 1999 doesn't really work, but it hasn't coincided with other driveability problems. The engine doesn't change in it's RPM's, the tachometer just stops working. Have your charging system checked. The shaking might be coming from bad fuel pump operation, clogged fuel filter, or dirty fuel injectors. Try putting an additive into your gastank to clean the injectors (a bottle of Seafoam is great for this). Try calling your local Autozone and see if they do free trouble code scanning. This might help lead you in a better direction.

SOURCE: I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL and need to add freon

if the port you are trying to connect to is bigger than the connector on the hose, then that is the wrong one. that's the high side. you want to connect to the low side, which is a smaller fitting. the fittings for 134a are quick disconnect.

1998 Ford Taurus can I test alternator in car running then disconnect battery cable

Yes, start it, pull the negative side of the battery. If it dies, the alternator is bad. To see the voltage out put if it stays running. Use a volt meter from the positive side of the battery to the negative cable while it is still off. If it is less than 12.5 volts, it still needs replaced. Because it can't keep up with the electrical of the car and keep the battery charged.

You have a short circuit somewhere and this is likely what drained your battery. Could be a bad alternator, wire rubbed through insulation, or other short. Get someone to look under hood while you try to crank it and see if they can tell where smoke is coming from. As an old professor once told me "All electrical circuits run on smoke. Be careful not to let it get out!" lol.

Most cars do this including the head lights , so the starter and ignition have less drain while starting. not sure if your model does this, If every thing is ok after starting nothing to worry about. If it wont start clean the battery terminals and check charging rate and battery.

I would say that the battery is flat or old and wont hold a charge, or the terminals are dirty. probe the terminals with a volt meter around 12 volts ok ,if little or no voltage probe battery posts 12 volts ok , if voltage ok now terminals dirty, if no voltage battery flat or dead.

Battery is charging but diagnostics are saying low battery

Well, I'm not an electrical phenom, but if it were my car,I'd check that the car has at least 13 to 14 volts coming from the battery while car is idling with all accessories off. If not, after stopping the engine, I'd take the battery terminal loose and test the battery voltage first to make sure there are over 12 volts being put out.IF less, you probably blew a cell, which means a new battery.
If it checks okay, take the battery to auto-zone for a test to see if it has enough cranking power.
If the battery checks okay, and the car is charging okay at 13 to 15 volts,
it might have reset itself while the cables were disconnected.
There are fuse links and things that might enter into play also.
A good mechanic can troubleshoot it.don-ohio (:)

I would look at the positive cable at the battery and at the starter. Pull the cabel off and a continuity test to see if the wire has a internal break if the wire gets even a pinhole it can build corrosion on the inside of the wire and when a current is put through it it seperates (from the resistance and arc from corrosion) causing the wire to seperate internaly.

Hope this will get you started!
