SOURCE: anyone know how to replace the third brake light on a 1999 windstar ?

Look on the inside of the liftgate and you'll spot a plastic trim panel/piece directly behind the High Mount brake light. Gently pry this piece off and you'll have access to the bulb and socket.

SOURCE: How do I replace Brake light switch?

Make sure the switch is the culprit. Do the other taillights work when braking? if so, look for a problem elsewhere, such as wiring to the 3rd light. Give special attention where the cable is routed through the trunk lid.

SOURCE: how to replace the third brake light...

There 2 screws holding on the cover. Remove the 2 screws pull off cover. To remove the light bulb twist it to the left or right. It will only twist one way to get it out of the socket that it is in.

SOURCE: third brake light out

Couple of things....#1..the 3rd brake light is on a different wiring circuit then the lower brake lamps. #2...The 3rd lamp shares the same fuse as the trailer hitch wiring. So if you ever pull a trailer, it's easy to blow the fuse. #3...the dash was changed in 2003...in 2002 the fuse is in the underhood fuse block....2003 it is in the left side dashboard fuse block. #4...If all else fails...rebuilt lamps are available. You obviously have a poor connection there somewhere. I'm sure the dealer will help, but whether or not this is warranted may be another issue. A third brake light can't ever be that hard to repair for a dealer.

Try checking the electrical connector which goes into the brake light.

Im trying to connect a 3rd brake light to a 99 camaro is the green wire postive

Hi William, To begin, the usual color coding on American vehicles is black is ground. To test this, take a long length of cable and a test light. Connect one side of the test light to battery positive and and the other cable connect to the black wires one at a time. If the light comes on normally you have proved the ground connection, then do the same with the other. Next connect the test light to the green cable and the other cable to the black. Press the brake pedal and observe if the light illuminates. If all is well, connect the black cable from the third brake light to the black cable of your car and the red cable from the after market brake light to one green cable from your car an insulate the other. Then go ahead and mount the third brake light. Regards John
