Gas Pump pressure could be cause, try slower pump handel setting. If that doesn't correct it, filler neck maybe issue. Check vent tube for kinks or obstruction. If that doesn't solve it, speak with dealer service department, sometimes Factory knows of issue and my have service information at dealerships or call factory and ask them if they know of problem.

SOURCE: pumping fuel into the car takes forever ,and gas backflows

Fuel Backing up in the fill nozzle is most often caused by a restricted fuel tank vent line. This vent line runs from the tank to a charcole filter that stores the tank vapors while still allowing air to pass. It is typically located in the engine compartment. Look for a pinched hose first in the engine compartment. Typical hose diameter is 10 mm or less. If you have had recent work done on the car in the fuel tank area, this also may have resulted in the line being pinched or rerouted in error.

good luck

SOURCE: can't fuel xg350 2002 at gas station difficult

there is a tube that runs along side the filler neck to the gas tank, this tube allows air to escape from the gas tank as you fill it, if it gets kinked or obstructed then you have a hard fill situation, pull the filler neck/vent assembly out and replace it.

SOURCE: Gasoline pump at gas station keeps turning off

There is a vent valve located near the fuel tank. The vent valve is part of the EVAP emission system. If the valve is obstructed or failed, air will not escape while refueling.

I have a 2004 Volvo XC90 and as i pulled out of my drive way it just dies as if someone flipped a switch tried numerous times to restart but it just will not fire

Sounds like fuel issue. Might sound silly, but check fuel level in tank first. If there is fuel, then fuses. Not sure if Volvo has a separate fuse for fuel pump, but worth to check. Is all electrics working ok?

Unable to unlock gas cap for a Volvo XC90 2007. What is the best approach on how to fix it?

Use a pair of water pump pliers to force the gas cap off. It will destroy it so get a new gas cap first

Sounds like a bad fuel pump or a clogged filter

Sounds like a bad fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter. Hit the gas tank with a rubber hammer when it won't start and try starting out again.
Sometimes the pump will work again long enough to get to a mechanic.

Where do I locate the Fuel Pump Controller Relay on a 2007 Volvo XC90??

The relay is located in the Fuse/Relay box as shown. You may find that your fuel pump is not putting out the required pressure though.

2005 volvo xc90 2.9 l smell gas in garage after filling up

Hello, I know you posted this question almost a year ago and I don't know if you have your answer yet. I just wanted to let you know we had a similar problem after purchasing a used 2003 Volvo XC90 earlier this year for my daughter to drive around, and found out that there was an outstanding recall on it due to the fumes from the gas tank. It had something to do with the fuel lines, and and the fuel tank, and being in a southern state (in which we are) I would suggest checking to see if your car falls into this category.

How do I access the brake light on the passenger side of a 2007 Volvo XC90?

You need to remove the upholstery from that side. It is fixed with wide, plastic knobs. Turn them open 1/4 turn and remove the upholstery.

The lights are assembled into a plastic 'cradle'. If you're new to this, only remove one bulb at the time and replace it.

I have a 87 volvo that i need to replace the fuel pump on, does anyone know if the pump is under the back seat or do i have to drop the gas tank? Or is it any diagrams on the internet

I'll tell you. In the trunk, behind the rear seats is a raised deck covered in carpeting. underneath, there is a galvanized steel plate, with 4 screws holding it down. underneath is th fuel pump cover, 3 wires, 2 hoses. to remove it safely, go to and order the fuel pump bung nut tool. After that, the fuel pump, sock, and sender unit can all be lifted out (it is all one assembly). Have fun!

I also have a 2004 XC90 and a couple of months ago I had the exact same probelm... after multiple visits to my dealer's auto shop they figured out that it was the fuel pump. They replaced the fule pump and the smell disappeared. Good luck!
