Most likely you have a transmission problem. Have the code/s read. Could be a solenoid or a transmission rebuild.

Steering wheel locked up

Just a question that might help.
Are the wheels straight or turned at a hard angle? If the wheels are angled turn the steering wheel in the same direction and then try to turn the key with pressure still on the steering wheel. You have to take the pressure off the stop to have the key cylinder turn.
If the wheels are straight have you tried a different key?

My break lights have quit working also can not move shifter out of park unless i put her in N

Lets start with the shiffter, the shiffter has a lock release solenoid and gets its power through the brake light switch . this is a safety feature so that you are on the brakes before being able to shift, this avoids the car from taking off. the problem has to be in the brake switch area.

This car being a 1996 Mercury Cougar i would say first check all the fuses. if you have a testlight this would be very helpful.

The first thing to do is to look under the dash, locate the brake pedal and follow the arm up, where the arm connects to bracket you will see the swith with a connector on it. these switch connectors go bad and one of the wires break off, Make sure both wires are connected, if one has broke off then that is your problem, you will need to replace the connector or hard wire it with new ends,

If the wiring looks good then use the test light and test end end of the connector one wire should have power at all times. turn the key off to point before engine starts, dash lights will light up. test at this time just in case power is off with key off, some cars are that way and some not but lets be sure key is on and test each wire. most of the time there are only two . again one has power the other should have power when pedal is pushed.

the way it works is power is sent to switch when pedal is pushed it make contact inside and the power flow into the other wire and on to brake lights and shiffter release and so on. if the other wire does not get power when pedal is pushed then switch is bad. if there is no power at any wire then fuse is bad. try these tests and see .

if you do not have a test light then turn key on and have some one watch light as you jump connector. use paper clip and jump both and if lights come on the switch is bad if no lights then check fuses, the paper clip will act like switch for testing only, it will complete path so power will go to other wire. let me know the results or if you need more help. good day.

I have a 2006 Dodge Charger R/T that the gear shift is stuck in park. I turned it on and it will not move out of park. I put foot on the brakes and still nothing. I have one brake light that is out on the...

I have the same problem. If you take the casing apart that surrounds the shiffter you can push the little pink lever in with your finger and shift it that way. You have to do it from the front left of the shifter where the cable goes into the shifter. It is called the shifter control module. The overide button doesn't work with this problem. Dodge just told me a new shifter was $30 and the are on back order.

O/D off

That means that your OverDrive is Turned off. On the end of the Shiffter on the Steering Column There should be a Swith that says O/D on it. If you press the Button this light will go off.
