1987 Chevrolet Celebrity Serpentine Belt Routing and Timing Belt Diagrams

I had to replace the belt on a 1988 Buick Century (similar to the Celebrity, but with a four-cylinder engine). I found that the only tool that could reach the belt tensioner in the limited space was a socket on a breaker bar; there wasn't room for a ratchet, and I couldn't get the correct angle for a wrench. There may be more room at the end of a V-6 The tensioner bolt is one of the larger metric sizes.

Clean all of the pulleys before installing the belt. Verify that the belt tensioner, water pump and alternator bearings are good - no rough spots or slop, and make sure the tensioner spring is good - the tensioner should require some force on the tensioner bolt head to move it, but it should not grind, hang, or have out-of-plane movement (perpendicular to the pulley rotation).

If everything looks good, you can install the belt. The grooved side is on the inside around the grooved pulleys, and the smooth side is on the inside around the smooth pulleys. Make sure the belt is correctly seated on the grooved pulleys. Save the tensioner pulley for last - use your tool to pull the tensioner in against the spring, and slip the belt on over the tensioner pulley. {CAUTION: do not let your fingers get between the belt and the tensioner pulley. If your tool slips at this point, you'd be in a world of hurt.} Take one more look to make sure the belt is centered on all of the pulleys, then slowly release the tool to apply tension to the belt.

How do i remove the drive belt on a 2006 Toyota Solara?


Serpentine belt replacement is not complicated and requires only one tool. Find the tension pulley located at the bottom of the motor. This pulley is attached to a very strong spring and holds the belt tight against the pulleys through its serpentine route around the engine. Use a socket wrench with a matching socket the same size as the hex head bolt in the center of the tension pulley. Attach the socket and set the direction to tighten the same direction the spring action allows the pulley to move. Turn the wrench handle, the pulley moves and the tension on the belt slackens. Take the belt off the pulley and let it hang. 
To install the new belt Once the belt is around the pulleys allow it to hang freely at the bottom of the engine. Again, use the socket wrench to turn the tension pulley far enough so the belt can be wrapped around the pulley. Once the belt is around the tension pulley, release the socket wrench and allow the tension pulley to take up the slack.

How to change power stering pump on 1995 Chevrolet1500 2wd with 350ci with air conditioner


  1. Lift the hood. Remove the power-steering cap. Use the turkey baster to siphon as much fluid as possible from the power-steering pump reservoir. This is done to lessen the fluid loss when the hoses are removed.

    Remove the two pressure hoses from the rear of the power-steering pump, using a wrench and common screwdriver. The high-pressure hose is threaded into the back of the pump while the lower-pressure hose is held on with a clamp.

    Loosen the belt tensioner by using a wrench to move the tensioner away from the belt and removing the belt.

  4. 4

    Place the power-steering pulley extractor tool on the nose of the pulley. The tool has two half shells that clamp around the lip on the nose of the pulley and around the lip of the tool. Thread the tool in until the shells fit on both the pulley and the tool lip. Install the circular metal band to keep the shells in place. Hold the threaded head of the tool with a wrench. With another appropriately sized wrench, turn the large nut above the shells counterclockwise to pull the pulley off.

    Remove the bolts securing the pump to the support bracket. Remove the pump.

    Install the new pump. Insert the securing bolts and tighten. Install the pulley by holding the pulley on the shaft while threading the extractor tool into the center hole of the shaft, with the shells removed. Hold the head of the threaded shaft with one wrench and turn the large nut clockwise with another wrench to push the pulley on the power-steering pump shaft.

    Install the serpentine belt by pushing the tensioner away from the belt while wrapping the belt around the pulleys. Allow the tensioner to press on the belt, causing tension.

    Install the two power-steering hoses. Fill the power-steering pump reservoir with power-steering fluid. Start the truck and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock, left and right several times to bleed all the air from the system. Check the fluid one more time.

How to move the serpentine belt tension pulley on a 2001 chevrolet suburban in order to replace the alternator? thanks


You don`t have to remove the pulley itself.Use a light and look at the tensioner.You will see a square hole on the front of the tensioner.All you need to do is put your 3/8 ratchet in this hole and relieve the tension.Then just remove the belt off the alternator and leave it lay on the other pulleys.You don`t need to remove it completely.This will make it easier when installing it.Hope this helps.Good luck.

The Tensioner Pulley Bearings are failing and either the Tensioner Pulley or the Tensioner Assembly (Pulley, Arm and Base) must be removed and replaced.

1. Remove the Serpentine Belt.
"HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with a Tensioner:

Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
C. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
D. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Removing the Tensioner Pulley: See the Diagrams in the Link.
After the Belt has been removed, with the Tensioner resting:
DEPENDING ON WHAT TYPE TENSIONER:
IF the Tensioner Pulley itself HAS a Bolt Head showing, SOME of these bolts can be removed and the Tensioner Pulley replaced.
IF the Tensioner Pulley itself DOES NOT HAVE a Bolt Head showing, then go to the Tensioner Base located at the end of the Tensioner Arm. This should have a Bolt Head Showing. Remove this Bolt and the whole Tensioner Assembly will com off.

When replacing the Tensioner Assembly - MAKE SURE you place the protruding "nipple" on the underside base of the Tesnioner into the appropriate cavity on the engine face.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with Tensioners:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them

buy a new tensioner assembley and idler pully and might as well get a new belt while your at it. you will need a 3/8 ratchet a 15 mm socket and a 13 mm socket there is one bolt holding on tensioner remove it discard old tensioner put new tensioner in place and tight bolt. second remove bolt from idler pulley discard old pulley put inton place and tighen bolt. next install belt fallow belt routing digram put head of 3/8 rattachet into hole on tensioner or on bolt head of tensioner pulley depending on style of tensioner and pull or push to create slack in belt push belt into groves on all pulleys and release tensioner

Belt tensioner. Socket size? Or is there some other way to release the tentioner so I can replace my belts.


Forget trying to get at it from the top, go underneath. Take off the plastic shroud inside the passenger side fender. It's held to the frame by three bolts (10mm?) and a couple of quick fasteners. Once it's out of the way you can see and work fairly easily. I did not need to jack. Locate the flat pulley, it's obviously the tensioner. Loosen, but do not remove, the nut in the center of the pulley. Then locate the bolt head on the end/tip of the bracket that the pulley is mounted to. That is the adjuster. Loosening that bolt loosens the belt and vice versa. The power steering belt tensioner is very similar. Enjoy yourself!!

Removal & Installation

2.0L Engine
  1. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Spark plugs Catalytic converter Right front wheel Right inner splash shield Accessory drive belt and idler pulley
  2. Rotate the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC) and install Crankshaft TDC Timing Peg T97P-6000-A.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise against the peg.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Water pump pulley Valve cover Crankshaft pulley Timing belt covers
  5. Install Camshaft Alignment Timing Tool T94P-6256-CH into theslots of both camshafts at the rear of the cylinder head to lock thecamshafts into position.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and relieve the tension onthe timing belt by disconnecting the tensioner tab from the timingcover back plate.
  7. Remove the timing belt.

To install:

NOTE Always replace the timing belt after loosening or removing it.
  1. Install the timing belt.
  2. Engage the timing belt tensioner tab into the timing cover back plate.
  3. Adjust the timing belt tensioner until the index marks are aligned. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 17-20 ft. lbs. (22-28 Nm).
  4. Remove the camshaft alignment tool and the crankshaft TDC peg.
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Timing belt covers Crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolt to 81-89 ft. lbs. (110-120 Nm). Valve cover Water pump pulley Accessory drive belt and idler pulley Right inner splash shield Right front wheel Catalytic converter Spark plugs Negative battery cable
  6. Start the engine and check for proper operation.
