What kind of car you have would be helpful. Running it with a bad water pump could cause more damage then you have now.

There is a high pressure pump driven off the flywheel in an auto. If this is not working properly there is no pressure to drive the torque converter or the valves and brake bands that operate the gears. An auto trans shop should be able to put a gauge on a tapping point to test it.

automatic i assume? the trans could be slipping if trans fluid is brownish red and smells kinda like burnt catpiss that is an indacation . if someone tells you its slipping and needs to be replaced put new trans filter and fluid change first i have had alot of success with tranies just doing that and its relatively cheap

Transmission just spins when pushing on accelerator.

automatic or manual transmission?

can you clarify further what you mean by the trans spinning?

may you mean that the engine rpm's raise as you press the accelerator and yet the vehicle does not move?

I have a 1996 gmc sierra. It is not shifting properly. It will start going and rpms will just keep rising and then I have to let off gas for it to chage. Then I have to be carefull how much I press...

The torque conveter sound like your best option. It may not be pumping enough fluid to move and lubricate the gears in your transmission. Happened to me before. Check and see if your trans fluid is burnt up. My best bet would be that you may need a new trans.
