Try adjusting the switch on the column. They have slots in them where the bolts go in so you can adjust them by sliding it up or down the column. Pull on the switch where the rod goes in and see if you get anything. Let me know what happens.

1992 nissan maxima se 3.0 L new starter, solenoid, all relays, ignition switch still wont engage when jumping solenoid just bendix sound if I use ignition sw.wont do nothing help plz

If the starter works on the bench and you are manually energising the solenoid (to the little terminal) then it should work on the car if the battery is good and all the wiring and ground connections are good.

Shorting the two large solenoid terminals will just switch on the motor without engaging the pinion.

In your position I would have fitted a temporary starter switch until I found time to sort the problem out.

I suggest you remove the column shroud to expose the ignition switch wiring and bridge the supply to the starter terminal and if it starts the ignition starter switch (or the internal drive) is faulty and if it doesn't there is a wiring problem between the switch and the starter.

How to replace ignition lock cylinder

This may or may not help, but i found this

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Disable the SIR System.
2. Battery negative cable.
3. Knee bolster and IP steering column reinforcement. NOTICE: The steering column should never be supported by only the lower support bracket alone, damage to the column lower bearing adapter could result.
4. Lower support bracket from vehicle (2 bolts).
5. Upper column support from IP (2 bolts).
6. Lower steering column so that it rests on the driver seat.
7. Ignition switch wiring protector.
8. Ignition switch retaining screw and nut.
9. Ignition and turn signal switch column harness connectors from IP harness.
10. Turn signal switch connector from column harness.
11. Ignition switch, harness, and connector. Important

o DO NOT splice ignition switch wires.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Ignition switch, securing with retaining screws.

o Adjust ignition switch. Steering Column Unit Repair.

2. Turn signal switch connector to column harness.
3. Ignition and turn signal switch column harness connectors to IP harness.
4. Ignition switch wiring protector.
5. Raise steering column to support bracket.
6. Two bolts to upper support bracket. Do not tighten fully at this time.
7. Bolt and nut to lower support bracket.

o Align column to instrument panel opening. A small shim (wedge) placed between the instrument panel column support bracket and the column can be used to hold the column stationary while tightening the upper support bolts.
o Upper and lower column support bolts and nuts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

8. IP steering column reinforcement plate and knee bolster.
9. Battery negative cable.
10. Enable the SIR system.

How to replace ignition switch

1
Disconnect the battery to prevent ignition short circuits. Lower the steering column by removing the 15 mm column mount bolts. The column will drop safely down and the steering wheel rest in the seat.

2
Place the trouble light in a secure area under the dash and locate the ignition switch. The switch will have two black connectors that should be snapped firmly in place. The switch is easily recognized by the wiring harness that will have larger orange and red wires than other connectors. These are the main power supply wires. Carefully unplug the two connectors. Do not confuse these connectors with the lighting connector. The lighting connector is much longer, flat and does not have any large, power wires.

3
Locate the small, round, dimmer switch with a rod going into it. Leave it plugged in, but disconnect the mounting screws. The ignition switch shares a mounting screw with the dimmer switch. Remove two additional mounting screws holding the ignition switch in place. Gently pry out the switch rod that runs the length of the column to the key and tumbler.

4
Install a new switch by fitting the activator rod, mounting the new ignition switch with the screws and plugging in the wiring harness. Install the dimmer switch with the shared screw. Remount the column, attach the battery cables, and check the repair by starting the vehicle.

1989 wrangler 2.5L won't turn off with new switch

Hi there:Bad installing or a problem with the connections. The most likely problem is a bad ignition switch. To find out for sure, remove the plastic covers over the steering column and remove the 2 screws holding the ignition switch in place. Make sure the mechanism coming from the key is turning the ignition switch. If the mechanism works fine, replace the ignition switch.

I would suggest removing the ignition switch and checking the mechanism in the column to make sure it is actually turning the ignition switch off.

You could have a wiring problem, you will have to follow all the wiring from the ignition switch down the column and into the harness, there is sure to be a short in the wiring harness, that is if as you said you replaced the ignition switch for a new one.

To test this, remove the plastics around the steering column and pull out the wiring plug to the ignition switch, if the ignition turns off you have another faulty ignition switch if it stays on wiring harness has shorted out.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Ive replaced dist cap and rotor coil is firing but no fire to plugs

check for power to the coil, if there is no power...its a possible ignition switch failure. The ignition switches in these models have defective internal contacts, resulting in power loss to vital electrical components. You may check the ignition switch by removing the plastic cover around the steering column. Its a white round plastic unit with wires coming out, and located behind the key cylinder. Inspect for internal archs or black/burnt residue. Call you local Honda dealer for recall info, they will need your vin#...Hopefully this helps

Ignition switch diagram 65 mustang

If its not on the steering column, you can figure it out using an ohmeter on the switch leads. Actually, you could figure out the one on the column that way too! just think about what the switch does in each position and attach wires that do it to the post that does it! IE: starter solenoid wire goes to post that is hot when key is turned all the way to start. Main hotlead is the one that is common to all switch positions. run and accessories is to the post that is hot with key on, accessory only is the one only hot with key turned backwards.

Will not start, no spark

get spark tester and start testing from the spark plugs back. first hook it to aplug wire and check for spark if no spark ten hook it to the coil wire and check for spark if no spark then there is a chance that your coil or ignition module is bad if it is equipt with electronic ignition.
