Question about Cars & Trucks
I recently noticed that after turning my engine on, the rev oscillates and the engine sounds exactly the way it would if the thermostat for the AC was coming on and off, except the AC wasn't turned on and this oscillation is more intermittent than that of the AC thermostat. I also noticed loss of some power as I need to sometimes pump the throttle about 3-4 times during acceleration for it to pick up. This morning, I noticed a slight grinding sound immediately after the engine came on. Just wondering if all these symptoms are related. Please provide some insight as to what might be responsible. Thank you.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Definitely not the fuel pump. A fuel pump will either work, or it wont. It could be a fuel filter, though unlikely, again if it was clogged there would be nothing. Could be spark plugs/wires, a faulty coil pack, Could also be a handful of sensors (o2, MAF, are a few that come to mind). Does it have a manual transmission? If so can the car be started without engaging the clutch (in neutral)? If so check the 2 clutch sensors attached to the clutch pedal.
Probably a sensor. Go to Advanced Auto parts and have them pull the code. Then google it. Or check out Forums.vwvortex.com

SOURCE: 2002 1.6L GOLF, EPC LIGHT
It sounds as if your vehicle may have severe water damage to the engine. The engine sensors on the golf are suseptable to water damage and can result in epc light that you are seeing on your dash, or so i was told by VW. I replaced all the sensors, alternator and the computer on my original engine, but this action didnt fix the problem. So i bit the bullet and replaced the engine, and haven't had a problem since. If you do the labor yourself it can be done as cheap as $4000. I hope this helps mate.
