Question about 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

1 Answer

I have a 2006 cobalt and i just recently had the ignition recall fixed thinking it would solve my problem. When it gets below freezing outside it tends to cause it to kill the engine. It cranks right up but dies almost immediately. If i dont hurry and turn the key off the reduce engine /engine disabled light comes on i cant remember the exact code its throwing but i think its something like the ec module. Please help

You know about OBD Codes-so you have to retrieve
them, look them up & component test using them,to find
a problem

Your getting something on reduced engine power,so you
know the system with the possible fault & if you had the
factory diagnostic manuals, you could test, to find that problem

Need a professional to find the issues

Please turn the ignition on (not onto the start position just on to get the ignition lights to come on) and observe the yellow immobiliser light on the dashboard when you first turn the ignition on - Does it come on and stay on or does it come on and flash or does it come on and then go out? This sounds like an immobiliser issue, the ignition key has a chip inside it that has a code which is recognized by the engine ecu and if this recognition does not happen it will fire up and immedialtely cut out. The batteries in the key are for the remote central locking only. The chip is electronic.Try a spare key if you have one

Check your manual if you have it. I believe you need to have the key in the ignition in the ON position for about 10 minutes to reset the security system.

Well thats a pickle. I'm guessing it is out of warranty? I would call the dealership first and ask to speak to a service tech. Hopefully they will help you figure it out over the phone if they are nice. If not, you will probably want to bring it to a shop you trust and have them do an estimate. that will usually tell you the problem. It does not look like there is a recall for this issue.

We have a 2006 hhr. This is the second time we

GM has come out with a recall for the steering motor for the HHR, Cobalt and a few other cars that use the steering system. I agree it's junk. I am a GM technician and see too many of these come in for repair.
The key is also a problem area. The ignition cylinder binds, The shifter can cause the key to stick in the ignition, etc.
The turn signal is not a common.
Gm customer assistance can help you.
