Have to make sure the battery is good,(first thing you do)
& voltages are good, battery & alternator engine running

Then look at scan tool data

You NEVER Replace ANY Parts

Why would you replace a part,if have not done any
testing, to find a problem, requiring a part ?

It back fires, that tells you something

Did you check bulletins on that vehicles problems
( Failed Intake Gasket )from the Dex-Cool,is as possible

You Tube Video some problems with that motor

SOURCE: need to replace fuel pump on 2000 Gmc savana how

If the pump is in the gas tank, which most new vehicles are, you'll have
to drop the gas tank, to remove the pump and sender. Make sure you
do this with as little fuel in it as possible, seeing that fuel is like 8-10 lbs.
per gallon. Good luck.

Do you have spark? Gas? If you dont have spark you should look at the cam sensor instead.

Half of the engine not firing

If half the engine isn't firing, it may need a new coil pack. Most v6 and v8 engines have a coil pack for each side of the engine. Try swapping them around to see if the other side works; then you'll know. If it's not a coil pack, it's because your car has variable cylinder management, and it has electronics issue.

I was putting you in a thinking position.
Yes,if you disconnect the MAF-it will not start. Or if the computer has no input or control over airflow,as a result of a defective sensor.

Now, without your vehicle and some testing, I don't know if it is bad.
You suggested it wouldn't matter and would start.
Only replace it ,if you get it tested, and there is a problem. There is nothing you can do, and good luck finding a repair shop, that will do anything but replace it, and hope for the best,at your expense.
