First make sure a regular cassette plays OK. A unit that old may have a broken belt inside.

SOURCE: Chevy Cavalier Cassette Player

The post above mine, the member is correct regarding a new cd player, a cassette adapter will play only so good no matter what you add to your existing system, try a cd changer, not expensive at all and you can add it simply without compermising too much quality.

Did you remove the actual radio or just the control head , because the radio itself under the dash on the right hand side of the brake pedal just above the accelerator.

I want to install a new radio but can't find the main plug because the factory stereo and cassette deck are two different units in two different spots.

They sell a kit to install the radio where the tape player is located. To access the wiring you will need to remove your gauge cluster surround and remove the radio.

I would say the problem is inside the radio itself. I have no idea if anyone repairs these units anymore or if any good used ones are available.

Look up under dash where brake pedal pivots, you should see a switch that is activated by pedal arm.
