Is check engine lamp on? If so, read the codes. Is it possible the transmission is kicking in and out of overdrive, or torque converter lock up? If car has many miles on it, when did you last change the trans fluid and filter? Ever?

SOURCE: engine stalls

Seems like the idle position sensor. Take your car to get a trouble code at most auto parts stores for free. Autozone, kragen's , Checker auto etc. They will give you a code of the possibilites of the problem. Not what the actual problem is.It is called an OBII code.Post the code and we can find out.

My engine runs hot even though i changed the thermostat and coolant

The problem can be in the Electric cooling fan. Some models have 2 speeds and if the Relays are bad it will not switch speeds. Check with Autozone or Oreillys for the part and location.

Also check your Radiator hoses for collapse at higher speeds. You may need an assistant to rev the engine while you look at the hoses.

My ford contour 2.0L Fi Automatic- can't go more

The vehicle has a rev limiter. Will it rev over 3500 when you drive it? If no, then I would guess that the exhaust might be partially restricted. But the engine computer won't allow you to free rev the engine that high in park and neutral.
