If clutch is working well with the other gears, esp. 1st gear, than there is the possibility of damage to the bearings in transmission. I have 2004 Corolla that reverse & overdrive were the first to fail. Upon removal & opening it up the bearing closest to these 2 gears was obliterated. Check your oil for filings & metal. Cheap inspection camera MAY reveal something. Something to be aware of.

I take it you mean the transmission grinds when shifting into reverse with a manual transmission in which case the input shaft of the transmission is still partially engaged with the engine. One cause may be low fluid in the hydraulic clutch reservoir if it has a hydraulic clutch mechanism; use DOT-3 brake fluid and pump the clutch pedal a few times to remove any air. Another cause may be that the pilot bearing is hanging up; this is a major repair. Another possibility is that the clutch lining is coming loose or totally disintegrated requiring replacement.

SOURCE: removing door panel in 2000 toyota corolla

remove phillips scew and the door handle. remove padded arm rest on the door by lifting it up, and remove 2 screws. You can use a panel tool to remove the plastic toggle like pins holding the panel border in. Be as gentle as possible they may break due to becoming brittle.

How do i fix my toyota corolla (2000, 1.4 petrol) it wont go in to 2nd 4th and reverse gear. is it the linkage and if so how is fixed or is it expensive to get done by mechanic

if it is a stick shift , manual box then it appears that the pivot pin in the selector turret on to of the box has come loose
It can be repaired in car but you have to clear any console and rubbers to get to the 4 bolts that hold it on

!996 Toyota corolla, starts up ok but when put on reverse or drive, won't move even when pushed

Check the gear lever connection with the gearbox.
Check the gearbox oil level and colour. Replace if necessary.

Car only starts in reverse and only drives in neutral

Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.
