Why are all new cars being built with high beams as their primary lights if the rule is to stay 150 feet behind the car in front. Because you can't see when they are right behind you or traveling towards you.

There are no primary lights on a vehicle .That is why you have a dimmer /dip switch to go onto low beam when approaching a vehicle, travelling in built up areas or when travelling close behind a vehicle.. They should stay on the last position of the headlight switch and if they don't there may be a fault in the headlight module.

SOURCE: DRL and High Beam do not work right on Honda Accord EX 1998

Some time back I found some data on a similar website suggesting that the Day Light Running circuit board, just under the steering column, developed cracks in some of the soldered joints. Your high beams should also be affected with loss of day light running lights.
Resoldering repaired the continuity of the circuits. Ours is now working quite reliably. Some of the defective areas developed slight brownish discoloration, that's how I was told to recognise the areas to be resoldered. Hope this will help you solve your problem.

SOURCE: High Beam Indicator blinking

My lights have had this problem for months. From time to time I try to fix it, but I have learned the following:

1. [EASY SOLUTION] After turning off the car and turning off the headlights, when I pull the headlight switch back (toward me) and then let go, the running lights turn off. [/EASY]

Extra information that I haven't figured out how to use yet:

2. Apparently the DRL bulbs operate through the high-beam bulbs; this is why you get the high-beam light when the DRLs are broken (or whatever) and why you can turn them off with the high-beam switch.

3. My wife took the car out for a fluid change once and said the mechanic pointed at a light on the car and said, "that bulb's out," and that if she fixed it the DRL's would work normally, but she forgot which light it was. He even told her what bulb it needed. I took it to the same place and no one knew what I was talking about.

I don't think about trying to fix this very often since I realized I could turn the lights off with the high-beam switch. I used to worry that that blinker was somehow draining the battery, but it never has (whereas I once drained a brand new battery just by leaving the interior light on all night). I hope I've helped!

im a mechanic who owns a1995 pathfinder, had the same problem.your trouble is in your daytime running light module. try giving it a tap, bet they will come back on

I have no headlights on my 2004 f 150. Fuses are good but i do not have low or high beams. Bulbs appear to be good. I have running lights and fog lights


Based on what you have described it sounds like a bad headlight switch. Since the low and high beams generally use different fuses that can be ruled out. (although checking to be sure is a good idea) Usually both high and low beams go through the headlight switch that's where I would look first.

The adjustment screws/nuts should be located either on the top of the headlamp assembly, behind the headlamp assembly, or near the frame rail by the radiator support.

You will have vertical adjustment screws for each independent beam (separate highs and separate lows, but will be same screw if highs and lows are the same bulb). You may also have additional horizontal adjustment screws as well

Park your car on a level ground 30 feet from a wall and measure the height from the ground to the bulb and mark on a wall (do this for highs beams and low beams if the bulbs are separate, if highs and lows are the same bulb, only do it for the lows)

For Low Beams: If the headlights read VOR, then aim the brightest part or cutoff part just below the mark on the wall. If it says VOL or nothing, aim them 2 inches below the mark on the wall.

For High Beams (if separate from low beams): Aim the headlight directly at the line you marked on the wall.

Headlights, regular and high beam, are not adjusted properly. Also the high beam sends light straight up in front of the SUV ?

How do you adjust head lights on a1996 dodge intrepid after replacing both light assembly. Car was hit in the front & had to replace both lights on the car, lights are used from junk yard.


You should have two plastic nuts on each headlamp assembly, one will be for your high beams and one will be for your low beams.

The nuts should be located either on the top of the headlamp assembly, behind the headlamp assembly, or near the frame rail (might see holes in your rail above the headlamp unit where the screws are hidden)

Park your car on a level ground 30 feet from a wall and measure the height from the ground to the bulb and mark on a wall (do this for highs beams and low beams if the bulbs are separate, if highs and lows are the same bulb, only do it for the lows)

If the headlights read VOR, then aim the brightest part or cutoff part just below the mark on the wall. If it says VOL or nothing, aim them 2 inches below the mark on the wall.

High beam too low


I am assuming you are referring to their direction, not their intensity.
Around the headlight bezel are 3 screws. Do not confuse them with the screws that hold any cosmetic piece in place. These screws will be located around the bulb itself, usually at the 2 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 10 o'clock positions. They are used to align the headlights. You may need a flash light to locate them because they can be set back several inches passed the front of the light. Also you may need a extra long screwdriver (phillips or a torx head) to reach it. Best way to align the beans is in front of a garage door. The front of the car should be within 5 to 8 feet of the door. Using the light on the door as a reference, set the lights at the same level. Now turn the screw while watching the light on the door. It doesn't take much, raising the beam 1 inch on the door at 5 feet will bring the beam up several feet on the road.
I don't know the year of you vehicle but if you have newer style lights that are just small bulb inserts the principle is the same. However the adjustment screws may be located behind the insert.

Front lights


look at the head lights assembly. find some phillips screw there. two of them .either one on top and one on the side. these are the adjusting screws.

do it at night. park the car in front of a wall about 6 feet away and adjust the lights.
