Where is the problem arises
Have the codes read. even though the engine light is not on. cold be the catalytic converters. could be fuel filter.

Check the air filter. Check the exhaust. Check Engine light on? When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?????
Not enough information.
Subarus are tough. But, you have to take care of them. Had a 99 Outback went 300k miles. Have a 01 VDC just flipped 175k. NO major issues.

Count the shifts. It sounds like you are going into overdrive and staying there. Overdrive is too long legged to pull most hills unless you are really flying.. good luck

there is a problem in your gear shifter located insde your transmission. have a transmission expert check your transmission, since this is not a DIY job.
