How to replace a Dorman Harmonic Balancer on a 2001 Chevy venture van

What is a Harmonic Balancer?
The Harmonic Balancer, or vibration damper, is a component connected directly to the front of the engine on the crankshaft. Its sole purpose is to reduce torsional vibrations created by the engine as the cylinders fire.

What causes Harmonic Balancer failure?
There are a variety of possible causes for balancer failure. Most common among these are heat stress, wear from road salt, oil leak, or ozone attacking the rubber components, damage inflicted by road debris, crankshaft failure, stress from integrated drive pulleys, and stress caused by loads from other devices such as power steering pump, AC compressor, alternator, air pump, and water pump.

Misses when I accelerate , idles just fine

apply brake and accelerate engine while vehicle is standing still, you need to apply brake hard, DO NOT do this for a period of more than 1 minute or you will be putting alot of stress on your transmission. you will be trying to set off the "check engine" warning lamp or the "service engine soon" warning lamp, and get a misfire failure code, after code sets on your vehicle computer, get it scanned it will tell you which engine cylinder is misfiring ie "P0301= cylinder #1 misfire" then check out spark plug, spark plug wire and ignition coil. one of them is probably causing this.

The yellow engine light came on on my 2005 -5cyl. It seems to run fine, but I am concerned because I have no warranty and no money. What do you think it could be? It does not flash or blink-it just stays...

Everyone is on a budget!! What you can do for free is go to your local auto parts store and often they will have a service where they scan for codes for free. Retrieve these codes and ge back to me. The light staying on costant is telling you have a "hard fault". Get the codes and we'll work from there. Don't stress.

I have a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo V6 3.2l, when it gets warm or if I put too much pressure on the engine for eg. if I drive hard the check engine light and the reduced power light comes on, at which point then...

Could be the fuel pump, they tend to be a big problem on these cars, can't tell you how many people I've told to replace it. But I would get a tune up, 100 bucks and they replace all the spark plugs, increasing your gas mileage etc. It also might be a coil firing out of order, those aren't too expensive, but every mechanic has a little computer that they can connect into your engine that will tell you everything that might be wrong, that's another thing I tell people frequently, that way if something's going bad and will brake soon and put you in a bad place, you can fix it early and save yourself that stress for another day.

Hope it helps.

Transmission "slips" when downshifting, especially going up slight incline and accelerating. Also, engine "misfire" idiot light came on once. Turned off engine, restarted, problem gone. What should I...

Lincoln LS's are good for the ignition coils going bad. This mimics a transmission issue trying to accelerate going uphill. Take your car to a LINCOLN dealer and have them do a stress test on the coil pack. It will tell them which one is bad. Also if your car is a 3.9 V8 and was built in the Wixom plant (you can tell by the VIN) google it. All of your coil packs and gaskets are covered for 10 yrs or 100,000 miles whichever comes first. It is listed in the TSB's

Lack of power

You should try doing a tune up change spark plugs, wires, pcv,and fuel's reasonable to assume that the rings and
valves (inside the engine) have become worn. Worn rings
and valves will cause the engine to have low compression
and low compression = weak power.
You may be curious as to why the engine's lack of power is
most evident when driving up a hill. Well, when a vehicle is
going up a hill, the engine is under more stress than when
driving on a flat road. Therefore, any wear in the rings/valves
will tend to be revealed - in the form of compression - when
the engine is under stress.

you will need to have a mechanic verify that the rings and/or
valves are indeed worn. Incidentally, this generally involves
what's known as a "wet compression test".
If the mechanic tells you he positively confirmed a worn ring
and/or worn valve condition, don't immediately authorize him
to do the work. Why? Because, this type of work is very
expensive and therefore you'll want to get several opinions
before jumping into anything. By the way, even though this
vehicle's high mileage strongly points to the above diagnosis,
it's possible the cause of this problem is something else.
For example, one of the electronic sensors that controls the
engine may have gone bad. hope this help have a nice day.
