Could be the power steering pump, if you have power assist, it could be the rack and pinion. You also need to check suspension parts, ball joints, tierod ends, control arm bushings, Etc...No year, make or model?

If the car is fairly new, why would there be "potential" air in the rack and pinion? Stationary steering is not harmful to the steering system, but it does wear out the treads on tire.

This should not have damaged anything! If your experiencing problems with your system you may have a bad power steering pump, or obviously a defect in the rack and pinion, Hopefully the vehicle is still uder warranty! If it is, take it to a ford delearship, and let them fix the problem for you. As long as your steering system is functioning properly, you should be able to turn your steering fully in all directions while sitting stationary all day long, without any problems
