I have a 2010 Honda rancher 420, 4 wheel drive, fuel injected, straight axle. It won't crank in neutral and up. Instead, it cranks in reverse, and reverse only. The neutral light won't even come on. What could be the problem

Get a wiring diagram, possibly online, and trace the neutral position switch and cable. My guess is there is something loose or needs some TLC.

If the switch (neutral safety switch) is broken, it will not crank regardless whether you jump the battery or a new battery is installed. I don't have specific manual for your year that's why my advice is as in general. With a remote starter tool, bypassing the solenoid wire with remote starter which is connected to the positive terminal of the battery of it's other end. Once positive current flows from the battery, through the remote switch, flowing towards the solenoid, the starter should engage indicating a bad wiring harness connection from ignition switch. If it doesn't crank at all you may have a bad starter assembly and needs replacing. If your starter is clicking using it's own battery power, your battery is low of charge or your charging system is malfunctioning.

Starter fluid, if used, simulates fuel going into the throttle body or carburetor.

If starter fluid is present in the intake manifold and the car doesn't start when the 4 spark plugs have bright spark, then the fuel is not getting to the engine somehow. This indicates a bad fuel pump or blown fuse for the fuel pump or wiring to it. It could also mean that the fuel injector(s) are plugged or not firing due to the computer not working right.

Do you hear the fuel pump working when the ignition key is turned to ignition? What is the pressure using a gauge?

If the engine's starter cranks the engine then the starter is ok.

If the engine cranks and cranks and won't start, possible timing belt skipped a few teeth or broke.

Check the fuel injectors by listening to them clicking with a stethoscope. If they don't then having pressure present from the fuel pump is not enough to allow the engine to start and run on its own power.

Sometimes the anti theft security system that came on these cars start to fail and the car can literally turn of the starter and/or injectors. Next time this happens, check to see if there is a light on the dash that says SECURITY. This would be a dead give away of the problem. Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

Honda Rancher 420 4x4 has clicking noise coming from axle area, not for sure what going on, could it be bearings?


Hi if this is happening on turns then You probably have a bad axle outer bearings, you can try and look to see if one of the axle boots is ripped letting the grease to leak out, Again if this is happening on turns you will need to figure out witch front axle it is, just replace that axle, on Honda's replacing the boot and adding grease really never work,there is usually too much damage to the 5 balls in the axle cup, I hope this helps, let me know.

While riding my Honda 420 rancher 4x4 I was shifting from 1st to reverse it made loud noise and now seems to be stuck in 1st and reverse


sounds like its an internal tranny problem. something like possibly broken/cracked shift fork. it will have to pulled and inspected.

2007 Honda rancher 420 installed new fuel pump Fuel injected still will not start, we spray gas in it will run


Even with a new pump its important to check fuel pressure and flow . Low pressure fuel pressure regulator stuck open or fuel pump faulty . Low flow blocked fuel filter . if the above is all ok. Back probe injector with led trouble light , light will glow while motor is turning over. if not check fuses , if ok check injector cable back to the ECU for bad connections .

I have a 1992 Honda civic lx with a 1.5 four cylinder, and Ive replaced the ignition switch the fuel pump relay and the fueled pump itself however, the fuel pump still doesn't prime when I turn the key...


no start , crank perfectly
so , got spark?
the ECU has programming (ROM) and in fact kills all fueling with no spark , (even if it thinks there is no spark, even if spark is ok)
all ECU use a way to read back spark quality, (ALL){LAWS}
how honda does it in code, i don't know , see C R O M E forum)
turn the key over means nothing to me.?? sorry, it doent/
try saying what postion? cranking? or just keyon.
now some more EFI rules.
The EFI (some) do not activate the pump relay until cranking.
some do just key on for 3 seconds, read the FSM, its free.
need a link to the free manual? read the ECU logic on that.?
and prime has a special meaning, it means purge air,
its not for fuel. some system send a fast prime pulse. to clear air from the pressure lines, this plus does not inject.
that is how EFI works,

the flow
1: key on, ECU sends prime pulse, (air purge)
2: some ecu, run pump for 3 seconds, and pressure hits 35psi? RTM.
3: all ecu activate pump cranking and running.
4: now check pressure. !" 36 psi FSM stated spec"
5: now crank, if the ECU sees no spark errors, it injects
6: if the ECU sees WOT. it stops injection to clear a flood, cranking.
those rules cover most ECU made.

honda this year has a special feature called,
Fuel Cut-Off Control'
if this messes up, it i can cut fuel

Do you mean it won't start, or won't crank.
You should have a neutral safety switch between the key switch and the starter to prevent you from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.
A defective switch would keep the engine from cranking.
A mechanic would check for voltage at the starter on the wire from the key switch and go from there.

You do have drive and reverse,if you have park and neutral.It just the transmission cant transfer that power a new or rebuilt is the solution
