Question about 2002 Nissan Maxima
2002 GLE, A/T 160,000 miles 24mpg normally runs great. Periodically, without any cause, the sunroof opens; 1st time we experience shifting issue was when one of these occurences happened. Makes me believe it may be electrical in nature.
Sounds like the revolution sensor. There are more than one if I read correctly on that Maxima and could cost about 800bux to fix.

There are three sensors on the transmission that tell the computer how fast your going so it knows to upshift, have someone check input sensor, output sensor, and speed sensor.
Have you been told to change the transmission fluid and filter? Read this first before you do some job: www.myhonestmechanic.com/articles/transmission_slipping.
Also could try to scanned the trans module, to know is some fault code is stored there.
keep us updated.

If it goes into other gears correctly, then the issue is likely a synchromesh problem with that particular gear, and the gearbox may have to be stripped.
You may try changing the gear oil first though, as this can often fix the issue without having to spend too much money on unnecessary repairs.
