Torque specs axle nut


Most people don't own a torque wrench that goes past 150 lbs
& you can't push it that far

So if the nut was say 180 or 206 you have to stop at 140 & then
use a 3 foot 3/4 drive bar or ratchet & go another 1/8 turn.

Axles slipping out of transmission


You may not like what I am going to say, but it is possible the axle is not going in far enough to lock.
You should have to tap or knock the axle shaft into the transaxle to push the clip past the groove.
It only takes a 1/4 inch to not be locked in, so it can look like it is seated.
Of course it is possible something happened to the differential but not likely. There is also the chance the replacement axles are somehow different, but again not likely.

I had to replace my driver side cv axle assembly, but I cannot get the new one to go in. Every thing looks the same as the old one, any suggestions?


moonpieeyes, You don't mention here what end you are having trouble with but I am going to assume that it is the end that goes into the transaxle. If you take a look at this end you will see a snap ring just before the end of the shaft. This ring keeps the axle from coming out too far as to cause a leak from the seal. You have to get this ring past the splined gear in the transaxle. Place the axle into the transaxle as far as it will go, make sure the splines are engaged, and then use a little force (push the axle straight in) to compress the snap ring and into its proper place. You will know when this is in place because the tulip portion of the axle will be very close to the transaxle and you will feel it "hit bottom". Continue with the rest of the reassembly. The right rear axle is bent on my 2005 Ranger. How do I remove and replace this axle? Does it have a clip that locks it into the differential?


kiker graham, Yes there is a clip that holds the axle in the differential. First jack up the back of the vehicle and support with jack stands. Put the transmission in neutral. Remove the wheel and brake drum from the axle you want to remove. Place a catch basin under the differential and remove all the bolts on the rear cover of the differential. Remove the cover and let the gear oil drain out. You may have to move the break line to remove the cover. When the oil has drained out turn the drive shaft until you see a small bolt in a recess on the right side of the assembly on the opposite side on the main drive gear. This is an 8MM bolt that has to loosened very carefully. First, using a punch, place the punch on the head of the bolt and hit it a few times with a hammer to "loosen" it up. This is done to avoid breaking the bolt. If this bolt is broken then you are going nowhere with this job. BE VERY CAREFUL when removing this bolt. When the bolt is out you can move the pin that it is holding. You will notice that this pin is very close to the ends of the axles. Do not completely remove this pin as the side gears will fall out. Pull the pin out only as far as you need to, to push the axle in towards the center of the vehicle. There is a C clip that will fall out when you have done this. Sometimes you have to spin the C clip to get it to fall out. Pull the axle out only far enough to put the center pin back in place. After you do this push the center pin back in and put the small bolt back in to hold it in place. Remove the axle. If the axle is bent and you say it is then it would be a good idea to replace the axle seal at this time. You can use the axle itself to remove the seal. Use the groove where the C clip sits. Place on the inside of the seal. Using the axle as a pry bry, remove the seal. Replace the seal and put the new axle in. You will have to move the axle around a little to get it to engage the splines on the inside of the side gear. Once again pull the center pin out only far enough to push the axle all the way in. Place the C clip in the slot at the end of the axle and pull the axle out as far as you can. This wont be much. Push the center pin back in and replace the little lock bolt and tighten it up. Clean the cover and the back of the differential and use silicone to seal it. There is a fill hole on the front side of the differential. The plug for this hole will accommodate a three eigths ratchet. Fill the differential until the gear oil starts to spill out of the hole. Replace brake drum and wheel. Good luck with this.

How do I change the front driver side axle assembly on a 2001 Dodge Stratus?


first jack up side you will be working on and place jjackstand under the frame, next remove the wheel,to make it easier remove the caliper and tie away, dont remove the brake hose!, then remove the rotor it slides off you may need to tap backside with a hammer, next is to remove the bolt and nut from the lower balljoint, then use balljiont tool to saperate the lower control arm from spindle, you may need a pry bar to pull down on control arm to completly separte move spindle to side and let arm up, next remove the axle (cv) nut on the front, then use pry bar to pop out of trany, install new axle hold straight and slide into tray as far as you can then with nut on the axle a little tap to axle in to trany the rest of the way you will feel it go in and lock and then reverse direction to put back together, hope this helps.

How to change cv joint 94 dodge caravan


remove front wheel, remove nut on cv joint, next remove bolt from lower balljoint, break free to sperate balljoint from spindle, use a fork and hammer and a pry bar to pry lower arm out of the spindle, pull sindle back and slide axle out of hub, use wire to tie spindle back out of the way as far as it will go, caution of abs wire and brake hose, dont pull to far away, next use a long pry bar and go between back of axle joint and trany, give a quick pry to pop out of trany, to install new one apply grease to the lock ring on the end of axle that goes into trany, center the clip best you can, slide into trany then at other hit with a hammer you may want to put nut on so not to damage threads, you will feel axle pop in and lock, reverse order to put together. hope this helps.

1998 ford expedition how to install rear spider gears


Find a PICK-your-PART auto salvage and go get a whole rearend for $150 or so. You will be way far ahead. Or submit to the BLUE OVAL (dealership). Sorry no easy fix.

Spider gears fell on rear differential 95 ford explorer


It's not easy to put them back, but if you get the side gears in position with the axles bumped out as far as you can, the smaller spider gears can be "walked" into place. Try having your buddy rotate one of the wheels slowly until each one fits in. It's tricky but you'll get it.

Did you support the vehicle on a lift and run it, with wheels engaged?
Since you have changed all the usual suspects, Have you checked the hub bearings? It could be that, or, something stupid like a backing plate hitting a rotor.
Regarding the cat/o2 sensor thing. Cats do go bad, so do o2 sensors but, generally a code for an o2 sensor indicates a problem elsewhere, causing a lean or rich condition in the exhaust pipe, beyond the parameters of the o2 sensor. PS: check warranty on cat. generally it runs longer than many other components.
