The people that stole your vehicle probably drove it until something failed. If the tow truck operator did not use a tilt tray but simply picked it up by the front then there is a distinct possibility of transmission damage done as when towed in this fashion ,the tail shaft has to be removed ( not applicable to front wheel drive vehicle). It is best to have the vehicle inspected by an accredited service centre specialising in your vehicle make to get a proper assessment of the damages for insurance claim procedures.

There are 3 transmissions that could be in your car,the 3 speed auto and 4 speed auto overdrive, and of course the manual 5 speed. The 3 speed is designated the 3T40,the 4 speed auto is the 4T40E trans. To check the fluid level, first, the car has to be warmed up to at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The car has to be raised in the air,as there is a steel plug in the trans case that has to be removed to check the fluid level. The plug takes an 11 mm or 7/16" socket or wrench and is located on the passenger side of the trans case, near where the passenger side axle engages into the trans. The procedure is to warm the car up to at least 100 degrees, engage the shifter into each gear selection pausing for about 5 seconds in each gear, then remove the plug.If fluid drips out,it is full.If no fluid drips out,add fluid through the top of the trans after removing the red plastic cap,and make sure to use a long funnel to avoid a mess.Add fluid until it drips out the hole. When done, replace the plug and cap.Just a note,a transmission does not "use" fluid like an engine uses oil.If you have to add fluid, that means there is a leak that needs to be repaired.Good luck

Sir I would first change my filter. When you do you should be able to acertain if anything is wrong by what yuo find in your pan. I think your clutchs are probably bad, but with out being able to scan it I don't have any other ideas. I have been lucky a couple of time before and changing the filter solved my problem. Your car is in limp mode generally you have reverse and second gear. 1st gear and reverse use the same clutches, so I am wondering if maybe you have second gear only!

It's in limp home mode. You'll have to check wire connections and electronic controls. If it has a vacuum modulator you can remove it and look for trans fluid on the vacuum hose side (meaning ruptured diaphram). Double check the parts you replaced as well, especially if they were used parts. My dad went through three speed sensors in one year on his Caravan. You should drop the pan after checking other components. It could be a bad relay, shorted module or wire. The three speed transmissions are much more reliable than the four speed overdrive transmissions but with age and miles things can go wrong and parts will wear out.

Disable Pat system in a 1998 Ford explorer

I guess you lost the key and that was the only one, so now what I will tell you is there are supposed ways but they are all unreliable and when they fail it's always that your far from home or in a situation that becomes more and more unbearable as time goes by so the best thing to do is to call a locksmith he can erase the keys in the system and reprogram new ones for you way cheaper than a dealer and he will come to you versus towing to a dealer and then paying $350-$400+/and then the tow bill, but there is another way if you go to a junk yard you must get the lock and key which most likely will be one key? the ring antenna that goes around the cylinder the pats transceiver the instrument cluster and the computer all from the same car and switch them with yours this will work but now your back in the same situation with one key or if your lucky they have 2 for the car then you can add keys yourself it's pot luck this way is cheaper but a decent locksmith might cost the same amount with less hassle and a warranty good luck Adam I'm also in somewhat the same boat by a have the chip and a regular key and have to hold it on the back of the cylinder to start the car anyway what's your situation here ? Where does the transmission fluid go in a 1998 vw passat?

VW transmissions are seal and only take a special type of transmission fluid. Need to buy the correct type of fluid from your local VW dealer.
As for this being your problem, might want to verify first by checking to see if you have any codes in the transmission control module or the engine control module.

While driving from work to home (roughly 10 miles) i noticed a large amount of smoke trailing my car. i proceed to pull over and check the issue and found that transmission fluid was leakin from some where...

whenever you have a transmission leak you have to get it towed, sounds like you need to start looking for a replacement transmission at a wrecking yard

Transmission has failed. Probably between $3000-$4000 depending where you live and the cost of labor at local shops.

Transmission Control Module

We are not a parts service, but try an internet search for used VW parts, there are many VW only wrecking yards, that is your best chance of finding it. Also call VW and see if they sell a rebuilt module.
