was the timing belt broken?

Are you sure the cams are aligned correctly?

If the belt was broken It may be wise to do a compression test. This should tell you if a valve has bent.

How many miles will last a cam belt on a VW Polo 1.2 manual 2004?

VW say to inspect the belt every 60,000miles or every 6 years, whichever is soonest.
they do not actually say to change the belt at this time, but due to the work involved in just checking it and as the belt is made from rubber compounds which deteriorate over time, it is normal accepted practice to change the belt at this interval rather than risk belt failure.

belt failure on this engine WILL cause damage to the head and the valves, normally resulting in replacement of at least the head and valves, with the possibility of piston and cylinder damage as well.

as a 2004, yours would be due at least an inspection as it is over 6 years old.
normal practice would be to change the belt, and the tensioner, and usually the water pump for peace of mind as the water pump is only accessable when the timing belt is removed anyway.

i do not know where you are so cannot give an estimate on price, but it will be worth asking the dealer as well as one or two independent garages for prices.
