How to valve time vw polo bby engine?

A car does not start after replacing cam belt, it backfires when trying to start.

I have jusy replaced the head gaskets on the motor but i cant seem to get in back in time ive tried to turn the disturbitor but its like it backfires what is the standard time line for this motor.

Set timing belt light on a quantum 2.5 diesel


Simply line-up the two timing marks, mount the belt, and try starting the vehicle. If the vehicle fails to start or backfires, remove the belt and rotate the cam sprocket ONE FULL TURN, then re-mount the belt. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT ONE TOOTH OFF ONCE YOU MOUNT THE TIMING BELT (THE MARKS SHOULD STILL MEET EXACTLY).

I have a 1999 plymouth breeze and replaced water pump and timing belt due to pump locked up and all the teeth gone off belt now. 2.0 SOHC that after setting belt and timing correctly the car wont start...


In general, backfiring indicates the cam, crank and ignition are out of time or out of phase. The timing marks on the crank and cam just line up the timing of the cam and crank. The alignment of the spark with them has to be phased at the right time too. Check the manual for how to set the distributor timing after an engine repair

was the timing belt broken?

Are you sure the cams are aligned correctly?

If the belt was broken It may be wise to do a compression test. This should tell you if a valve has bent.

2000 pontiac sunfire replaced head gasket now it still wont start, it just backfires


It sounds like a timing issue. Make sure the cam shafts and timing belt are installed correctly. Hopefully you have not belt any valves while trying to start it. Good luck.

My RV cam broke in my jeep.


Possible low/insufficient oil to the heads/cam causing the cam to lock. Excessive sludge build up, or defective/worn head or cams. I would have the camshaft lobes checked for scorging, warping before replacement. Hopefully this helps

take off your distributor cap and turn the engine over, does the rotor spin around? if not might be your timing belt! and if it does spin it still could have jumped a tooth on your timing belt? can you poor a little gas down the carb ? will it try to start? if it does but backfires then your timing belt may have jumped a gear or two...

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.
