Installed new piston rings and gas is getting inside oil

Hi i installed new piston rings and i also got my cylinder head rebuild. after complete installation of engine i started the car and it was running rough and jerking hard with no power when pressing the gas pedal. So i took the cylinder head off and found one of the valve not closing and all the valves was black. what is causing the car not to run smooth and leak gas in oil?? do you think it's the cylinder head since i have new rings installed.?? Please help

    rings ? what you do is slip a ring into the bore and measure the gap after honing the bore of course but assuming all this is ok which i wouldnt lose sleep over ,take the head off again and i do feel you should be able to use the head gasket again and take the valves out yourself ,its easy to do not difficult ,put them in a electric drill and spin them up you will soon see if thay are bent or not ,right time to hit the old interweb thingy to see if i can find any software floating about for the old jam hars ,failing which i will try DC++ file sharing where of a weekend a lot of mechanics leave the firms computer on ---- and as i can key search their sharing files i often manage to get some dealer only software not that i can do a lot with it unless i can download the digital signature as well ,yes its complicated for a old dinasaur like myself but hey!!! its winter and the dark nights and all that

I think you have bent all the valves rebuilding the engine,possibly 14 valves out of the 16 valves are bent ,piston ring gaps are 4th per inch diameter of the piston so hope you got this right and the wear in the piston ring grooves wasnt excessive either ,but when fitting the head make sure all four pistons are level halfway down the bore before fitting the head then align the timings marks on the engine then turn the crank by hand to align the crank shaft mark and if its on the end by the flywheel then a spot of white paint on the front end so when your underneath you do not have to keep moving around checking the flywheel,All this damage you have done yourself although i will give you full marks for trying and commend you on this its just you need a bit more experiance modern day engines are all out of square with valve overlap unlike the old long stroke engines of yesteryear where you could start them with a starting handle .And the cars where made of metal and no IT university course on decrypting encoded software was needed .enough said rebuild the head and try again but full marks for trying

Valve not closing is from a bent valve. Black soot is from over fuelling and incomplete combustion. Oily chamber is oil from the rings. It si possible that more than one valve is bent as it occurs from turning the engine over without letting of the rockers when adjusting the valve timing.

All those codes have on thing in common and that one thing is the electrical ground connection to the chassis or engine. You need to locate that connection and make sure that it is clean and tight.

Did a qualified professional do the work?
Is the smoke light grey or black? Light grey is usually oil.. black is over rich carburetor.
Were the valve stem seals replaced?
Was a new piston and rings installed?, Was the cylinder bored and the correct new piston and rings installed?..
What is the compression on this engine after the rebuild? ... Ie should be over 120PSI. !!

What are all then parts needed to rebuild a chevy 251 v6 engine

Remanufactured cylinder head, remanufactured Crankshaft. new camshaft, new valve lifters, new oil pump and filter, new piston rings and the cylinders bored to true again (if needed). All engine gaskets.

Why is my newly rebuilt 5.7 350 chev. Engine burning so much oil. It's not leaking, and not smokeing out tail pipe?

what was entailed in the rebuild?
cylinders bored and hone , new pistons , rings
crank grind and new bearings
or was it just a ring refresh and sand paper on the cylinders
I'm thinking the latter ( cheap and nasty)
The oil will be coming past the rings and being burnt in the exhaust ( cat converter if you still have one )
That oil passing the rings comes from , glazed bores , rings being installed upside down, ring gaps not being set 120 degrees apart but almost lining up
worn ring lands in the pistons
Sump oil either leaks out -- Gaskets , seals filters or is passed by the rings and burnt in the combustion process

196cc Honda clone engine burns oil.can this be fixed by replacement of top compression ring?

You don't replace just the top ring, you do them all

If the cylinders are not bored, it could be no ring replacement
will help

You need to ask that at an engine machine shop, in person

If your doing your own work & did a head gasket & not heads
& valves, your doing a lot of work & not fixing much when
you had the chance

You ask a question no one can answer

You don't say it has 150,000 miles & is worn out

If that is the case, you also bore the motor & do a complete
rebuild & have the shop do all the work but install the short
bock & then you do the head install & the rest

Why is my 1990 xr200r smoking and the plug keeps fouling and spitting oil. New piston and rings valves and seals has great power starts easy but when you shut it off it won't start back cause the

new rings indicates the problem
Rings only go in one way and if installed upside down
pump oil into the combustion chamber
next the ring gaps have to be at 120 degrees apart and not in line
the cylinder was bored out but was the ring gaps checked be fore installing
experience has shown that with most re bores and the correct rings fitted, the ring gap will be 80% of the max wear allowed instead of the minimum gap of .012"
What oil is in use as some oils do not promote sealing and are too "slippery " to allow the rings to bed in on the cylinders

I have oil in my throtle body 1993 toyota4runner 3.0L What could it be

A side effect of increasing compression when you bolt on fresh heads, is broken piston rings. It's beneficial to replace the rings & bearings and at least remove the ring ridge at the top of the cylinder wall if not re-bore when replacing heads due to the higher compression that will cause.

If you just put on a set of used heads.

There's also the chance that the new headgaskets didn't seal completely, (usually due to a problem with surface prep or a warped head/block), but if you've got high mileage, it's usually the rings.

A set of rings can be replaced, but you'll want to make sure they haven't cut into the bore so much as to cause blow-by once new rings are installed. Eliminating the ridge by carefully using a ridge reamer at the top of the cylinder to prevent breakage of the top ring from impact.
Hone the cylinder walls gently & reinstall pistons & new rings!

The engine has blown. I need to replace it or change pistons and rings. How difficult is it to change pistons and rings?

It can be time consuming and the end result may not be desirable if you haven't done it before.
--- The following is just a sample of what to do once the engine is torn down: Pistons and Connecting Rods
  1. Before installing the piston/connecting rod assembly, oil the pistons, piston rings and the cylinder walls with light engine oil. Install connecting rod bolt protectors or rubber hose onto the connecting rod bolts/studs. Also perform the following:
    1. Select the proper ring set for the size cylinder bore.
    2. Position the ring in the bore in which it is going to be used.
    3. Push the ring down into the bore area where normal ring wear is not encountered.
    4. Use the head of the piston to position the ring in the bore so that the ring is square with the cylinder wall. Use caution to avoid damage to the ring or cylinder bore.
    5. Measure the gap between the ends of the ring with a feeler gauge. Ring gap in a worn cylinder is normally greater than specification. If the ring gap is greater than the specified limits, try an oversize ring set. Fig. 5: Checking the piston ring-to-ring groove side clearance using the ring and a feeler gauge tccs3923.gif

    6. Check the ring side clearance of the compression rings with a feeler gauge inserted between the ring and its lower land according to specification. The gauge should slide freely around the entire ring circumference without binding. Any wear that occurs will form a step at the inner portion of the lower land. If the lower lands have high steps, the piston should be replaced. Fig. 6: The notch on the side of the bearing cap matches the tang on the bearing insert tccs3917.gif

  2. Unless new pistons are installed, be sure to install the pistons in the cylinders from which they were removed. The numbers on the connecting rod and bearing cap must be on the same side when installed in the cylinder bore. If a connecting rod is ever transposed from one engine or cylinder to another, new bearings should be fitted and the connecting rod should be numbered to correspond with the new cylinder number. The notch on the piston head goes toward the front of the engine.
  3. Install all of the rod bearing inserts into the rods and caps. Fig. 7: Most rings are marked to show which side of the ring should face up when installed to the piston tccs3222.gif

  4. Install the rings to the pistons. Install the oil control ring first, then the second compression ring and finally the top compression ring. Use a piston ring expander tool to aid in installation and to help reduce the chance of breakage. Fig. 8: Install the piston and rod assembly into the block using a ring compressor and the handle of a hammer tccs3914.gif

  5. Make sure the ring gaps are properly spaced around the circumference of the piston. Fit a piston ring compressor around the piston and slide the piston and connecting rod assembly down into the cylinder bore, pushing it in with the wooden hammer handle. Push the piston down until it is only slightly below the top of the cylinder bore. Guide the connecting rod onto the crankshaft bearing journal carefully, to avoid damaging the crankshaft.
  6. Check the bearing clearance of all the rod bearings, fitting them to the crankshaft bearing journals. Follow the procedure in the crankshaft installation above.
  7. After the bearings have been fitted, apply a light coating of assembly oil to the journals and bearings.
  8. Turn the crankshaft until the appropriate bearing journal is at the bottom of its stroke, then push the piston assembly all the way down until the connecting rod bearing seats on the crankshaft journal. Be careful not to allow the bearing cap screws to strike the crankshaft bearing journals and damage them.
  9. After the piston and connecting rod assemblies have been installed, check the connecting rod side clearance on each crankshaft journal.
  10. Prime and install the oil pump and the oil pump intake tube.
  11. Install the auxiliary/balance shaft(s)/assembly(ies).
  1. Install the camshaft.
  2. Install the lifters/followers into their bores.
  3. Install the timing gears/chain assembly.
  1. Install the cylinder head(s) using new gaskets.
  2. Assemble the rest of the valve train (pushrods and rocker arms and/or shafts).
  1. Install the cylinder head(s) using new gaskets.
  2. Install the timing sprockets/gears and the belt/chain assemblies.
Engine Covers and Components Install the timing cover(s) and oil pan. Refer to your notes and drawings made prior to disassembly and install all of the components that were removed. Install the engine into the vehicle. Engine Start-up and Break-in STARTING THE ENGINE Now that the engine is installed and every wire and hose is properly connected, go back and double check that all coolant and vacuum hoses are connected. Check that your oil drain plug is installed and properly tightened. If not already done, install a new oil filter onto the engine. Fill the crankcase with the proper amount and grade of engine oil. Fill the cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of coolant/water.
  1. Connect the vehicle battery.
  2. Start the engine. Keep your eye on your oil pressure indicator; if it does not indicate oil pressure within 10 seconds of starting, turn the vehicle OFF. WARNING
    Damage to the engine can result if it is allowed to run with no oil pressure. Check the engine oil level to make sure that it is full. Check for any leaks and if found, repair the leaks before continuing. If there is still no indication of oil pressure, you may need to prime the system.
  3. Confirm that there are no fluid leaks (oil or other).
  4. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature (the upper radiator hose will be hot to the touch).
  5. At this point any necessary checks or adjustments can be performed, such as ignition timing.
  6. Install any remaining components or body panels which were removed. prev.gif next.gif

My 1997 c class merc 280 has lost compression what can the problem be?

your probably looking at a complete rebuild...worn piston rings, worn valves/ guides, cracked cylinder head, piston, or engine block. If your lucky its just a head gasket, but you would most likely see water in the engine oil (milky looking). Turbo or super-charged- look for problems there also...

I'm afraid the only advise I can give, is to overhaul the engine.

It's using oil, therefore the piston rings are worn out, as well as the bearings, (Crankshaft, camshaft, and connecting rod) The cylinders may need to be bored larger, and oversize pistons installed, (As well as oversized piston rings)

When bearings are worn, this increases clearance between the bearing surface, and the object the bearing is installed on. Oil squirts out, and is thrown up on the cylinder walls, making it's way to be burned along with the fuel/air mixture.

New gaskets will be installed, which will stop the oil leaks. The water consumption should stop. (Provided you just have a warped cylinder head, and/or blown head gasket. If the cylinder head is cracked, it will need replacing)

You will get Much better gas mileage, and the engine should run another 200,000 miles at least.

ur problem is very easy to solve, but its an expensive fix..........($$$)

i dont know how much u know about cars, but every car with en engine(other than the Wankel) which has pistons......the pistons run in the cylinders of the engine the top of the engine is where all the work is done, at the bottom part(just below the pistons), there is a lot of oil to lubricate all of the fast moving engine parts.....when a car burs oil what usually happens is that the oil goes up from the crank case, squesses between the piston and the cylinder walls and gets burned with the gas......and vise versa, at the power stroke the exhaust gasses enter the crankcase and slowly burn the oil that oil burns every 2 of the 4 strokes......there is 4 strokes in one rpm......idling is about 1500 rpm for ur audi....u do the math.......and the oil slowly burns........when the car heats up the oil burns even faster bacuse the temperature of the oil is already high.......
the pistons are equipped with piston rings to prevent oil from getting into the combustion chamber and exhaust gasses getting into the crankcase.......and the tolerance between the pston and the cylinder is also very important for the car not to burn oil......
tehre are a few ways to fix it.........the best and the most expensive would be to: bore out the cylinders, get new pistons (v6...) and get new rings, and u also might need to get the block and heads faced off(if there is any warpage....the heads are aluminum...).......
this process is called and engine rebuild and could cost u well over $2000 depending on what kind of quality u are looking for.......(its not worth it.....especially for this car, they are very cheap)...

the cheapest way to fix the problem about 75% would be just to get new piston rings.......but as soon as u take those heads off....shaving them is a must if they are warped.........and while u still have them off u might need to do the valves, which could also help the problem......and while u have the pistons out, might as well change them too...right???? so its spendy......

u might also have another problem,......a faulty gasket or o-ring, and the oil might be leaking from that faulty spot right on the exhaust, and might burn the oil that way...........that would defently explain the smell getting into the car.....if this is what is wrong, then the fix could be very easy, fast, and cheap...

if ur burning too much oil, it could be both of the problems at the same a few more on top of that......

i hope this helps......... if someone could only help me.......

i know u have posted this a while back, and probably have the problem fixed by now, but if this could help anyone else, then its not a usless waste of time......
