I have a 93 jeep Cherokee, it will move in 4wh and in 4wl but will not go back into 2wd?

Hello guy
try posting what 4wd system you have,? first.
command trac or select track, (the latter is full time)
part time or the full time system,
we cant guess it....
read the operators guide first, if a part time system only
as i suspect, stop driving on dry pavement.
it's only for ice, or dirt. part time. part time is not a full time system.
Command-Trac
shifting to 4wd on dry (means no ice) pavement causes, drive line wind up! and the gears to lockup. (see steering get tight in turns?> and is dangerous to drive it like this , you, me and the box)
posted here 100s of times.

http://www.rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.html

the non grand Cherokee. early

had these choices
  • 1987-2001: New Process NP231 Command-Trac, part-time only, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
NP231 has the following settings: 2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO
  • 1987-2001: New Process NP242 Selec-Trac, full-time or part-time, 2.72:1 ratio with low range
NP242 has the following settings: 2HI, 4 full-time, 4 part-time, N, 4LO

as you can see you need to first know, what NP box you have or
photo your shift lever for 4wd, an post it and we tell you.

more facts, on select trac. (totally unlike command trac)
Selec-Trac locking hub is used on 4WD Cherokee. Selec-Trac
utilizes a non-disconnect front axle. Engagement of 2WD or 4WD is
accomplished at transfer case by means of mechanical shift linkage.
System allows full or part time 4WD. Selec-Trac can be shifted into
2WD or 4WD modes from inside the vehicle at any speed.
unquote
next from the service manual,
4WD TO 2WD
1) Place mode select switch in 2WD position. Transfer case
should shift to 2WD and not allow shifting into 4WD or LO range. Axle
should shift after transfer case shifts.
2) To determine if front axle has completed a shift out of
4WD into 2WD, position mode select switch back to 4WD position while
operating vehicle at slow speed. If vehicle shifts into 2WD, axle will
ratchet. If shift is not completed, transfer case will shift into 4WD
and hissing sound will come from mode select switch.
end quote.

if unsure read the FSM book its free.
shows you both systems and how to diagnose it.

in the box, click Cherokee,,then click 1993, and behold.
the real deal.

4 wheel drive won't engauge after replacing 4x4 button on my 91 ford explorer v6

First safely raise the vehicle and secure with jackstands. Next look at the rear portion of the tranny and locate the transfer case motor. Verify that the connector is properly connected and have someone push the button to shift (engine off, ignition on, trans selector in neutral, car wheels chocked). You should hear the motor momentarily whir as it rotates the gear that changes changes the selection from 4wh to 2wd to 4wd low. If you hear nothing, the drive plate that is located within the worm-driven plate has become detached. If you elect to fix it, disassemble and by noting the EXACT location of the multi-connector plate, re-attach with a bonding agent. I used superglue and it held for years. In the alternative, if you determine that the transfer motor is to blame and it is not something simple like a dirty connection, replace the motor with a reconditioned one for $52 at this website: http://www.partstrain.com/store/details/Ford/Explorer/A1_Cardone/Transfer_Case_Motor/1991/A148206.html?source=productads&c_aid=35697974186&c2cid=8660e66f-8cc2-4464-af49-b741e346c055
Good luck

Car will not engauge into 1st or 2nd gear

the gear grinding noise is because the clutch plate is not fully disengaging and the input shaft is still driving. If you did not use the same length of push rod then the slave cylinder is not moving enough to disengage the clutch. Check it out that with the pedal on the floor the piston in the slave cylinder should be almost to the edge of the slave cylinder . That is where It should be to be working properly

1996 Explorer Sport manual transmission will not go into gear at all now. The transmission and clutch have been replaced a couple years back. The clutch has never been satisfactory because it has to be...

if the clutch is hydrolic, sorry, there is really no adjustment. Hydriloc clutch master cylinders can be a ****** to bleed the air out and it could just take an afternoon of you and a buddy bleeding it. And remember, bleeding a clutch is different than bleeding breaks. It is a slow and time consuming process. If the pedal problem has been going on for some miles, you could also have a bad synchroniser in your trans preventing proper engaugement

94 explorer, manual trans. last night while driving, 4x4 and low range lights flash on then off. when I shifted into 5th getting on freeway, lose all drive power as if clutch suddenly went out. 4x4 light...

It sounds like the bearings inside the transfer case are going out, with pressure on it while accelerating its fine, then when you push in the clutch the transfer case gets slack allowing the internal parts to move, causing the lights to flash as gears move causing the shift motor to move. I would start looking for a replacement transfer case.

1991 Ford F150 Jumps out of 4W drive sometimes in reverse

My 94 did the same thing. In a automatic, you have to come to a full stop, it usually grinds when in 4L ,And for the shifter, I had to look at mine, 2w is all the way forward to the dash, then 4H is toward you 1 click, and "N" is the next toward you, then 4L , you have to push the lever down and pull backwards. Always come to a full stop when changing gears and wait a few seconds before changing direction.
