Diesel ,now this is a question i can answer but again as in common with a lot of questions its not the same as having my head under the engine and covered in black diesel engine oil,Now the black smoke is excess fuel which can be any number of causes but it would help if i knew if this was a common rail diesel or a pump ? as about this time some vehicles went common rail which is a different ball game to the older injector pump but first thing i would do here is to remove the EGR valve and block it off ,its at the front of the engine with a pipe coming from the exhaust to the valve ,block it off with a gasket made from a coca cola can or a beer can whatever you drink .Then see how it goes from their if still difficult to start and its a common rail then the computer may need a reboot which is a dealer only job and as no doubt a simple 80euro job becomes a 1000euro job new this new that and the other anything to push the price of the job up as i do know a couple receptionists in dealers and they bring their car to this old fleet fitter and of course for good customer relations i always take them for coffee in marias in the village ,and i listen ?? yes just listen amazing what you pick up.No block off the EGR valve first then see what happens its not essential to have a EGR valve i mean them old truck i worked on eons ago never had them did they ?

Check the cylinder compression! Could be low compression causing lack of power! Smoke could indicate spark not big enough, since glow plugs changed check ignition leads!

SOURCE: F-350 turbo-diesel hard starting

Imagine the white smoke is unburnt diesel. Anybody standing in the middle of it will be able to tell you soon enough.

Most likely culprit is that one or two of the glow plugs aren't getting hot enough. Usually just that the plugs need replacing, but worth checking first that the busbar which runs between them all is getting +12V at the appropriate stage of the process.

SOURCE: changing glow plugs in a 1997 1.8 ford escort diesel van

Hi Patrick.

I would check that you are getting a live feed to your glow plugs terminals first, on cold starting, with a 12v test light.

Expensive to renew them, and then find it was the fuse or relay !

Best of luck !
John.

SOURCE: 2000 TDI - Lots of white smoke at cold start.

Sounds like your injection pump timing is off, an injector is leaking or a bad seal on your IP.
VW dealers have a horrible reputation when it comes to TDI's. Check out the posts over at www.tdiclub.com Those guys are very knowledgeable - and the first thing they'll tell you is don't take it to a dealer.
You can probably find someone in your area that has a copy of Vag-Com (scantool software that vw uses) software that could look at your timing. It definitely sounds like your dealer was throwing parts at your car because they didn't know what your problem is. If I were you, I'd copy and paste your post from here over at www.tdiclub.com

Car wont start when engine is cool

sounds like a glow plug problem,if it starts o.k. when warm, but not when cold, does it smoke a lot when trying to start it cold,if so i would say your glow plugs are either burned out or theres no power to them when you turn on the key,do you see the glow plug light on the dash,it may light, but that doesn,t mean the glow plugs are getting power

My car didn't start one morning (cold morning) I

glow plugs have absolutly nothing to do with the car not going over 20 mph. sorry, but you gotta keep on em. at a guess i would say it was due to them doing a t-belt and not setting the timing right somehow. but that's just a guess.... while I love my TDI, the service and parts at most VW dealers are at the bottom of the list

Jaguar x type 2 litre diesel. how often should the glow plugs be changed?

Hi, glow plugs does not need changing unless the vehicle struggles to start in the morning or when cold. When testing the glow plugs, they should not take longer then about 5 seconds to become red hot.

Turbo diesel, cranks but does not start when it is cold.

Have the cold start valve replaced, it enriches the fuel mix during cold start and check the glow plugs and see if any are bad, to test remove the wires and put test meter to ohms and one by one test each glow plug with one probe to ground and one on the tip of the glow plug see it it goes close to zero if it does not move then that glow plug is bad, replace all that you find bad.
